I've seen so many people using abreviations, that I'm dizzy. How far do we need to shorten (or in many cases, only CHANGE) everyday words? I'm all for keeping things short & sweet, but give me a break! So many times the shorthand here is so short it becomes unreadable or completely incomprehensible! Doesn't anyone type in actual English anymore?

Mr_d3ad_man: My appologies I forgot that one!! (maybe I was blocking the visual trauma) lol

Jesus_Freak: You want an easy life? lol I wish you the best of luck :)

DebraB: I text more than talk on the phone, and can barely make myself use "2" instead of "too" yes it would be shorter and easier but it just looks wrong 2 me.

AshnBits: lmao!!! Did he actually pass that essay???? What a frightening thought!

Thank you Jesus Freak for proving the point of how stupid both Ebonics AND overused abbreviations look. You win the grand prize

This sounds like a rhetorical question rather than one for which you really expect an answer, but I would say that abbreviations, slang, etc. go too far when they are used in contexts in which not everyone could be expected to understand what they mean. For example, I live in California, so I can usually use the term "DMV" here and have everyone understand that I mean the Department of Motor Vehicles. However, if I'm talking to someone in another state, I am not communicating with them if we do not share a common acronym and they don't understand what I mean.

hehe.. I agree, but it is the age of text and Instant messaging (IMing) Makes me wonder if anyone knows how to spell anymore?

Guess if I had a phone and had to Text message I'd be shortening my spelling too (fingers would get tired) Think most of the abbreviations are out of habit from doing the 2 things I mentioned.

I try to use everyday English and proper grammar but sometimes its not worth the time to type out long words. Another thing that bothers me is when people misspell simple words, that's what the spell check is for people! Seriously though, I think that its alright to use abbreviations as long as they are ones that people can read and understand.

Its the new generation. We youngin's are tired of SPELLING EVERYTHING CORRECT AND NEED to shorten our vocabulary. Our attention span is minimizing with todays technology. There are times when it is totally unnecessary. Example essays school assignments resume's etc. Can you believe one of my friends turned in an essay like this. This is just one of the LESS dramatic ones.

Back when i was N elementary i was told not 2 chew gum N class....

People do use actual English to whom they feel is important to speak that way. Other than that people aren't doing it on the computer because they don't want to type out every word they want to say so they abbreviate. Good question!!
