I have seen a few posts on here where people assume that because they speak English, they are by far superior to those that do not.
With the Norman invasion, English became a third language in its own country, behind French and Latin. In late medieval England, English quietly ousted French in law and government, but the move to make it God's language meant bloodshed. English is classified genetically as a Low West Germanic language of the Indo-European family of languages.
Old English (449 - 1066 CE). The Old English language (also called Anglo-Saxon) dates back to 449 CE. The Celts had been living in England when the Romans invaded. Although they invaded twice, they did not conquer the Celts until 43 CE and Latin never overtook the Celtic language. The period of Middle English begins with the Norman invasion of 1066 CE. The United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have English as an official language. Knowing this, why assume you are superior to those who dont?

I don't think I'm better than anyone because I speak english. It just happens to be the language of my country. As far as I'm concerned there is no superior language. The only thing I care about is whether or not I can communicate with people. I will admit that I like to hear certain languages over others but that's just a personal preference. I don't think the people who speak those languages that I don't like the sound of are inferior to me.

Besides language is transient and constantly changes, why put so much stock in something that is never the same?

I will give you a very easy and practical explanation with two reasons. You see:-

1. it were none other than the British who sailed around the world and conquered most of the world's renowned nations. Some of the countries are USA, India, parts of Africa, the far east etc etc... Then they spread their religion which was Christianity.

***All made in England by the British in the English language ***

2. Take a good look carefully to your environment and surroundings. The present material world we are living in is based on British style. The basic science of everything which we use today were made and developed in England.
Some examples are like:
the Computer made by Charles Babage, the Laws of gravity and motion by Issac Newton and the universal science & theory of economics by Adam Smith which the world runs with.

Last but not the least, the English language is very easy as it has only 26 alphabets and it's grammar is very very easy. It is not so complicated and lengthy like other languages like French, Sanskrit, Arabic, Hindi etc etc.. To be good in English, you must have the power of imagination and logical reasoning.
Besides, computers can understand English better than other languages.

I certainly don't think that! English has been the excepted language for business in the world . I know that. But when I watch the news I am amazed at the people who do speak English even just a little bit. When a reporter sticks a mike in front of a person in Iraq they usually answer in English. It might be limited but I certaingly couldn't answer a question in Arabic. I would say that we need to push foreign languages in our schools. Make learning 2 Languages a have to before the person graduates.

Considering this is a forum that predominantly uses English and that it is the primary language for most of the users, it is not surprising.

Most cultures assume they are superior to others, don't the French believe they are better? The Germans? So why should the Americans and English be expected to be any different?

Personally, I have realized that being Mono-linguistic is a terrible handicap I have instilled upon myself. To try and learn from my own history and not repeat it, my son is bi-lingual and learning a third language.

I have Friends that are conversationally fluent in 5 languages.....I definitely do not feel superior.
