My daughter is looking at training a labrador retriever for agility competition. Any thoughts about whether a female or male is more suited for this? BTW, it's going to be a lab, we're lab people!

Some agility champions swear that if they are female, the male dog is more willing to please them and if they are male, then a female dog works best for them. However, I see it all, and don't think it really matters. Look for more of a "field" lab sort----more long legged and not a thick chunkier body that seem to largely be bred today. I believe hunters/sports fanciers breed this type I was keeping a field lab type and he was learning very well---a more agile physique, of this type is best.

I do not think that gender matters much either. It all depends on the dog. It seems that agility competitions are slightly dominated by Border Collies although any breed can be used. The dog just needs to be highly intelligent and physically capable (and somewhat built for) performing the tasks asked.

A female will be more patient with the traning, a male will be attentive to the training only for the first 30 mins or so. I would train a female for agility and a male for endurance trials.

I don't think gender really matters that much, I think it depends more on the dogs personality. I've met a few dogs of both genders that were equally good at agility.

It totally does not matter. You might want to get the most out-going, responsive puppy you can find - they often turn into the most responsive adults - and that's what you want when you're training for agility - a dog that's going to give his or her all.

It doesn't matter. Try to get one that is structurally sound to lessen the chance of injury. A high energy dog will probably do better, but will not be as easy to live with.

It doen't matter on the gender, i'm sure both would be good. make sure you adopt!!!
