My son (he is six years old) hit his head on a tree about three days ago and it was cut pretty bad. We don't have insurance (and don't qualify for Medicad) so I didn't and cannot take him to the hospital. I put butterfly bandaids on it but it's starting to look a pretty red around the wound and white around the outside of the cut. I'm not too sure what to put on it other than hydrogyne poroxide. I"m thinking about getting my friend (she went to nursing school for about a year and a half) put some stitches in. I just don't know what to do?!? Any advice?

First of all...stop making a excuses you should have taken the child to the HOSPITAL immediately they can and will better assess his situation then you are your friend!!!
Once they assess the cut, they will give you information to recieve services according to your income!!!
Why not HEALTHYKIDS..insurance?

Your son's cut is infected. The white is the white blood cells which have come to fight the infection. You can put iodine on to kill the germs or any other antiseptic liquid. I wouldn't advise the hydrogen peroxide, that is bleach, too harsh, and it obviously isn't working or the wound wouldn't look like that.
It is too late for stitches, and besides I doubt that she has learnt to put stitches in as I am at uni studying nursing and we do not learn that stuff at all. You have to do a special course after you qualify to learn how to suture. Otherwise only the doctor can suture a person.
He will definitely have a scar. You can reduce the size of the scar by treating the infection so go to the chemist and ask for some iodine or any other antibacterial solution. A cream probably won't work too well on the head. You don't have to tell the pharmacist what it's for. If it gets worse, then take him to the doctor as there is the risk of blood poisoning.

Check how deep the cut is. Definately get your friend. Your going to need it closed for a while, so you should use a bandaids for now. And good your using peroxide. The white is probably the white blood cells that got killed when he hit his head. The redness will definately be there, but it will go away. if it's puffy, then always keep ice on it. dont try to put his head down either. Wait about a week to see if the puffiness goes down. Then try a doctor that you know, or go to the doctor, not the hospital, and still take him to the hospital, just go around asking nurses what you should do. Also, describe the situation and tell them you don't have insurance.

First of all it is too late for stitches, second of all you can put triple anti-biotic ointment on the wound twice a day. Keep all hair away from it even if it means shaving a little spot of his head. If it persists to worsen, if the area starts to feel warm, or he develops a fever take him to the doctors office. It will be much cheaper than the hospital and the doctor will do the same thing in the office. Just keep the wound clean.

Your son needs to go to the emergency room. About 4 years ago my son did the same thing, except he hit his head on the side of a desk....it split his little head wide open. I almost past out from all the blood. He had to get 6 stitches. Your sons health is worth alot more than a few measly dollars it will cost to visit the emergency room.

I hate to say it, but you may have to go to the hospital. The law says that they cannot refuse care to anyone with an emergency - even if they can't pay. The worst they can do is bill you, and after that as long as you're paying $5 a month on it, they can't do anything to you.
It sounds like it might be infected - you should keep it clean with peroxide and put some clean gauze over it to keep any dirt out. Good Luck.

First off you need to take him to the hospital. Second after a certain amount of time stitches are useless 3 days is way too long to leave it open and stitches won't work.

GO TO THE HOSPITAL! They can not deny you the care. Your son's health is MUCH more important than the bill anyway. If he has white around the cut it could be getting infected and that could be extremely dangerous. I would go to the ER at the closest hospital. You don't want to mess with stuff like that.

You'd better take him to the e.r. and get it taken care of. They will give you a paper to fill out on income (even if you do not qualify for medicaid) Then they will base the bill on your income and let you make payments on it. Worst that could happen if you can't pay is a mark on your credit, and is a credit score really worth the health of your child. Think about it - this could be something as serious as blood poisoning that could kill him. And you'd better be careful before you get reported to CPS for neglect. It is negligence to not get medical services when required.

Don't let your friend stitch up his head, if it's no longer bleeding he doesn't need stitches. The redness means that it might be infected.Take him to the ER and let them bill you. They can't legally refuse anyone on the grounds of their inability to pay. When the bill comes, get on a payment plan and pay it in installments.
As far as the cut....hydrogen peroxide alone isn't gonna cut it. First of all you need to be applying a first aid ointment like neosporin as well. You should be applying it to all cuts and scratces.

I understand the insurance issue i just recieve insurance myself. But is there a way you could find a free heathcare clinic locally. What it sounds like to me that his wound could be infected. Dont have any whose not a doctor look at it. He might not even need stitches he might just need an antibiotic to kill the infection. So please get help cause infection spread out through the body and you dont want it to get into his blood stream and cause anymore damage health wise so please find you a doctor and please find you some insurance because having kids with no insurance is not the best thing for you right now please follow up with me to let me know if you need anymore help.
