Socrates predicted this as inevitable. He shows how one form of government leads into another. Government based on merit (a kind of inobled aristocracy) gives way to government based on ambition (timocracy), as the cultured philosophical (thoughtful) nature of the people gives way to accumulation of status. This ambitious form of government gives way to honoring the wealthy (oligarchy). Honoring wealth gives way to the weakness of not needing to do anything, and the poor (successfully) rise up for equal distribution of power (democracy).

The democratically raised youth tend to value insolence, anarchy and waste, calling them courage, freedom and generosity. They begin to see every politician as basically the same, and stop participating in government. The voracious insistence on freedom and equality in democracy gives way to relativistic thought; every opinion is equal, every belief worthy of respect. There is no authority, only “political correctness”. This mentality becomes its own form of tyranny. Everyone senses that they are entitled to equal consideration, and those who work and have wealth are encroached upon by those who do not. The workers and wealthy try to defend themselves, bringing into power a leader who claims to be a "protector". In the name of security this leader makes himself all powerful. For this to work, new threats must always be shown to the people, either internally or externally. Anyone who opposes this new despot is labled a "traitor" to the state, and the armies are constantly on the march.

This is from 2500 years ago. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

Americans, ever since achieving independence from Britain, have been a restless, conquering, aggressive people. We were not content to have our 13 states on the east coast, we had to move west and expand the nation either in civil ways like the Louisiana Purchase or by violent conquest, such as against the indigineous American Indians, by war against Mexico to take over much of what is the current western US. Then once we annexed California in 1846 by mostly peaceful means, when gold was found there in 1848 hordes of Americans arrived in California and either killed the Indians with weapons or with the diseases they brought with them.
We basically conquered Hawaii, and got Alaska thru a treaty with Russia.
Then we started to conquer territories around the world by force: Puerto Rico, Cuba (almost literally), and the Philippines from Spain in 1898, and once we became a superpower after winning World War II we started to overtly or covertly try to impose our political/military will on many "third world" nations like Korea and Vietnam and Central America, etc.
America is an economic/military empire now.

I usually refrain from saying things like this, but there are a bunch of ignorant morons answering over here. Why the wars and conflicts? Just read some of the answers posted and you'll realize why. I hope that these "brilliant minds" do not have children nor intend to have them in the future.

because we think we need to solve everyone elses problems apparently. but then we ignore the fact that we have homeless and hungry here living that we could be taking care of instead of geting into other nations conflicts. (however on the otherside, many people never wanted us to join in the world war 2, what would have happened if we remained neutral as most of the civilians at that time wanted?)

The USA belongs to the very few powers that have the courage to do something. The states of the European Union for example are cowards and rely on the USA to protect the order.

I don't think we like getting involved, but occassionally a threat looms that if not stopped will get so large that it can't be stopped. And there is something about Americans that don't like the idea of someone attacking us and getting by with it. The terrorists slapped us in the face, so the fight is on.

There will always be a country with the most power. Let's hope in the furture the most powerful country remains to be a responsible, moral and stable one like the US. We are always involved in conflict and war because we ARE that responsible, moral and stable power.

becuase we are the most diverse, and well formed country. we have been blessed with the knowledge and resources to become the world superpower. with the power also becomes arrogance and we are busy worrying with other countries affairs to be concerned with our own. we have so much money invested overseas trading, that we couldnt afford to lose the support of the other countries. so we're constantly having to intervene in their problems and becoming involved.
