there are a lot of good CAD programs out there and each has its good points. It really depends on how you want to use it and if you are using it for a business, school, or personal use. I don't think any cad program is free though. AutoCAD by Autodesk is the most popular and most versatile but it is also very pricey.

AutoCad by Autodesk is still the most versitile CAD software on the market. There are other software packages out there that are specific to any design descipline, but most of the engineering community use Autodesk products so you might want to make sure you can open or import your data into AutoCad or you might create headaches for yourself when you send files back and forth to your clients. One note AutoCad does have 3-d capability but there are many other programs which are much more powerful for that specific application.

CATIA is the Aerospace Standard for solid modeling and surface creation.

I think it also depends on what you wish to create with the CAD program. If you are just doing 2d drafting, then stick to autocad.

It depends on what you want to draft.

I prefer AutoCAD for drafting work that I do, but many people in my field (theatre production) use WYSIWYG to easily render rooms and lighting. VectorWorks is also a good multi-purpose CAD program.

Vector Works is much cheaper than AutoCAD, but they are both still fairly expensive.

AutoCADD is a good one. However if you are planning on doing 3-d drawings, I would strongly recommend Inventor. It's extremely user friendly and in my opinion is far better than AutoCADD. It gives a 2-d option after drawing your components also. To my knowledge there's no free versions of either, I've looked everywhere. So i'm afraid you'll have to pay.

Hope this helps.

Autocad is the best. Sorry. It's not free. You may be able to get a reduced price on a student version.
