A live CD is one that you can boot from. In addition to Linux live cd/dvds, the Windows and Mac OS X installation CDs also count as "live".

To run a Live cd, you just insert it into your CD drive and restart your computer. If your computer still boots to your normal operating system, restart again and check that it is trying to boot from the CD/DVD drive before the hard drive in the BIOS. Usually there are instructions on screen when you start your computer about how to enter the BIOS (sometimes called "setup"), and once inside find the Boot Order menu and make sure the CD/DVD drive is first on the list.

I've downloaded a Linux version called Ubuntu and I use it live on a computer which usually runs Windows XP. With Ubuntu you just insert the CD while using the normal OS that is installed on your computer and then restart the computer. Ubuntu usually runs after the computer has restarted.
I would recommend Ubuntu as a good version of Linux to start with if you're looking for a live CD.

A live CD/DVD lets you use an operating system without having to install it. You simply download the CD/DVD image, burn it to disk and boot your PC from it. It's a great way to try out operating systems.

Live CDs/DVDs are also essential tools to repair damaged operating system installations, be it Windows or Linux.

A live cd/dvd is a linux distribution that will boot of a cd and then load in ram, thus not using a harddrive partition.you can do almost anything a normal distribution will do.most of them boot directly into a user friendly GUI , such as KDE so you can play with it easily.
Hope this helps,

Put the disk in your CD/DVD drive, u have to select "boot from cd/dvd" first in BIOS Setup (press the key depended on the type of your mainboard when u turn on the computer, mine is the "Del" key). Then u have to press "any key to continue" or it will appear directly in some disk.

With a Live CD/DVD all you have to do is put it in, and reboot your pc, there is nothing to install and nothing to worry about, its so you can test / try and see if you like it.
