All they do is shout inane rubbish and annoy all the other passengers. For god sake sit together and whisper inane rubbish!!

I glare at them, they hurl abuse at me for a while, but then they get scared. Maybe it's the tattoos and piercings..........

I've also noticed this on buses and trains here in the USA, particularly with young males.
My guess is this: they don't sit next to one another for fear that someone might think they are gay.
