Circuit training is better for weight loss. I assume by conventional gym you mean free weights. What allows you to loose weight is burning calories. This is better done by cardio training: light weights, treadmill, stepper. etc.

Free weights are, primarily, for increasing muscle mass. This is not a weight loss measure but, normally, a weight gain measure.
Weight loss can be attained with free weights. You must use light weights and many repetitions, but that should be combined with walking, running, treadmill, or some type of cardiovascular exercise(which burns the calories) the weights function to build endurance and muscle tone.
The only exercise you want to avoid for weight loss is swimming.
Swimming is excellent for toning muscles, but does not act to reduce weight, because the water is colder than your body temperature and the body, automatically, goes into energy conservation mode to conserve heat. If you could get a pool to body temp(85 degrees) then swimming would be awesome. It works every muscle in the body.

As long as you do a cardiovascular exercise and eat healthy foods, you will lose weight. Lifting weights is important for muscle tone and strengthening your bones. The important thing for weight loss is to take in less calories than you burn. One pound is equal to 3500 calories so you have to burn that many to lose. I would suggest trying to burn 250 calories a day with cardio exercise and eating 250 calories a day less than you do now. This will equal 500 calories a day which is 3500 calories a week. This will give you a healthy weight loss that's not too fast. Circuit training is great for toning muscles while you lose weight so you don't look flabby. But, keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat so if you're gaining muscle, the scale might not go down right away.
