by looking at the drawings that leonardo did at the time he was alive
there is a series of very well known drawings which i believe are called the kodaks.(and yes thats where the camera company got their name from too!)
in these early drawings you can clearly see depictions of parachutes, helicopters,gliders,crossbows, catapults and even a car driven by springs!! amongst others.
there are no earlier recorded depictions of any of these items which is why he is accredited with inventing them, that isnt to say someone didnt invent it earlier they just didnt have the foresightedness that he had to draw and record them

It was Leonard DiCaprio who came up with the parachute and helicopter.... but I understand your confusion... NOT!
Leonardo Da Vinci's technical blue prints as well as his art work is preserved - his invention drawings have appeared in numerous books, magazines, etc.,.

He was wise enough to sketch engineering drawings of his inventions in a dated notebook. That convinces me - do you still have doubts?
