I was only in New York once but there are good eating places all over. The hotel will help you with recommendations and reservations. Sometimes just walking down the street and seeing which places the locals hang out will give you a heads up. I did that with a girl friend and we had a great lunch at an Italian restaurant. NY is a lot of fun.

If you want restaurants take a walk up Mulberry Street in Little Italy startin at Canal ST. The menus w/ prices are are posted outside the restaurants along with waiters that try to entice you to eat there. Pelligrinos is good, Cafe Napoli is a notch or so below but still good .If you walk a block east you'll be on Mott St. in the middle of Chinatown- {actually little Italy is in the middle of Chinatown} with an amazing amount Chinese restaurants, grocery stores and herbalists
All ethnic neighborhoods in NYC have great specialized grocery stores that offer authentic products of that ethnicity.
In addition there are some great gourmet grocery stores- Dean&DeLucas, Balducccis and my favorite Zabars [80th &Bwy]
Grab some great ingredients and dine al fresco
As far as Pizza goes : Lombardis [spring &mott] is good. I personally prefer Johns on bleeker and 7th Ave in both cases however it's whole pies only.
Watch out for Rays' pizza : there are some good rays and some not so good rays[ "Ray" is the Anglicized version of Rafael ]
Also
NYC portions on food tend to be large-especially when it comes to sandwiches
It is perfectly acceptable to when buying something in a deli or a cheese shop to ask for a taste of it
Finally since the world literally lives in NYC , NYC is the greatest food city on the planet ,consequently you can find a great variety of food in a great variety of price ranges. Take some time ,shop around, ask the locals what's good.

John's Pizza in Manhattan has really good pizza. They don't sell by the slice, though. And Pigalle, a little French place on...I think 8th (also Manhattan) is really good if you want a nice sit-down place. Not too expensive, either. The chocolate croissants at breakfast are terrific! And, if you see a cop who's not busy, ask him or her for a recommendation. Cops always know the good cheap places to eat!

Le Cercle Rouge is one of the best little places I have found in Tribeca. Food is fantastic and reasonably priced. Live music on Sunday afternoons. Make reservations on opentable.com.
Also, I love the Peking Duck House in midtown Manhattan. Best Peking Duck hands down. On 53rd Street, between 2nd and 3rd. I think the website is pekingduckhousenyc.com.

That has to be Lombardi's Pizza! It is the oldest italian restaurant in NY and is reasonably priced. It's also the most popular so you may have to wait up to a half hour for a table. But it's so worth it for the sauce alone!

If your going for the best, try this,
Le Bernardin
The city is full of ornate restaurants, but none of them manages to exude the glamour and class of Manhattan the way this one does, without any overweening glitz. The impeccable French service is the best in the city. The wood-paneled room is grand, but in an oddly soothing way. And then there’s the chef, Eric Ripert, who, unlike most super-chefs in town, tends to stay in his kitchen and cook. Go at dinner (when the room fills with suits at lunchtime, it looks like a corporate cafeteria). All the food is excellent—from uni seviche to barely cooked salmon with black truffles—but if it’s on the menu, order Mr. Ripert’s shrimp ravioli puddled in truffle sauce. Michel Couvreux is one of the great sommeliers in America—let him choose the wines.

There are very few reasonably priced restaruants in NYC. To get deals on food in NYC you have to go to smaller, not as popular places. Or try out some pizza places like Rays, or there is no shame in hitting street vendors. I have had some of my tasties meals
