Way back when students also had to help do the home chores and farm work and only attended school what we would consider part time. And, when all students were in the same room. Homework was a way for a student to progress on their own and show the teacher, no principal then, they cared about learning.

Initially children were not required to go to school and a parent paid the teachers salary, so the parent helped the student at home.

Whoever invited it must have had a mean streak of figuring you learn in more than one place LOL
