"Panspermia is the hypothesis that the seeds of life are ubiquitous in the Universe, that they may have delivered life to Earth, and that they may deliver or have delivered life to other habitable bodies; also the process of such delivery."

"ubiquitous" = common, everywhere

That does not explain "why," it proposes a possible "how."

Panspermia is the hypothesis that life on Earth could have been seeded from an extraterrestrial source (no, not aliens, think meteor, comet, space debris with bacteria and other microscopic life forms). This hypothesis arises out of the discovery of the piece of Mars rock that was found in Antarctica several years ago that had fossilized remains of non-Earth bacteria.

True story, look it up! :-)

I think that there is a belief that water and a special form of carbon that resides inside comets was deliverd here on earth during a period in earths history when comets and asteroids pummeled the earth ..These comets delivered frozen water that melted as the earth heated up in its infancy...look up the great bombardment period in earths history
