Rabbits sold in pet stores are not raised for human consumption. You could safely eat them, but they wouldn't taste very good.
Rabbits sold in butcher shops are usually one of 2 varieties:stewing which are older and larger(3# and up) and young fryers(2 1/2# and down).Just like chicken, fryers will be much more tender!

Try to get a "FRESH" rabbit as opposed to frozen,(sometimes they can stay in the freezer case for years)I know,I've seen us do it!
We used to have a contract with a diet center for ground rabbit,I have boned out thousands of these little bastards.

Hmmm... a pet store rabbit would not be cheaper they are almost $40.00 per rabbit, l\plus they are not very tasty..... rabbit raised for food eat different things. And it's really hard to skin a rabbit- I would go the butchers.

My Dad hunts and eats rabbit! Heck, a bullet on 25 cents, go shot your own!!

Butcher would be a little more expensive, but you would be assured that the meat that you were getting did not come from a sick rabbit.
