I have a TIVO machine and I love it! However, I have to pay nearly $30.00 a month for the telephone line (that's on top of the $12.95 TIVO charge). Since I have a cell phone, TIVO is the only reason I have the land line telephone.

What would be the consequence of disconnecting the telephone line from the TIVO? What would I loose? I don't mind checking the TV schedules every day to see if there is something I want to record?

What would happen if I tried to use TIVO without a telephone line attached?

Thanks for any responses.

Here is a clarification. My wife and I have cell phones that we use at home and at work. The Only Reason we have a land line phone is because we were told TIVO required on. We have the cheapest Sprint/Embarq rate: local calls only with no long distance or other services such as call waiting. The only reason for the phone is to connect TIVO. We haven't even given the number to our family or friends. No one calls us on the land line except an occassional wrong number. The charge for the no frills land line is $16.95 a month -- with taxes and fees it comes to nearly $30.00 each month. We also pay $12.95 monthly to TIVO

I'd like to disconnect the phone all together, but I don't know how that will affect our TIVO service.

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.

Is it a regular Tivo unit and not a DirecTV unit? If so, with a regular TIVO unit you would not get software updates or the program guide. You should look into setting up your TIVO unit to connect wirelessly to the internet to get updates and program guides. (This can NOT be done on a DirecTv Tivo unit.) See the link below for instructions.

EDIT: Based on your monthly fee of $13 for Tivo, it looks like you have a regular Tivo unit. If you have a high speed internet connection, and a router, you should hook up your Tivo to your home internet network. Make sure you get an adapter that will work. Check out the revised link for instructions.

What damn phone plan are you on?! And what TIVO charge for the phone?? Anyway the Tivo will work fine without the phone line but after time it will start to slow down (not with tv but with the commands to pull up guide, record, etc) until you put phone line back in so it can update the Tivo software...the longer without phone the slower it will get but never really that bad. I used to go without phone hooked up to TIVO for months because I had no phone jack near the Tivo so every 3-4 months would disconnect and hook up to other side of room so it could use phone line to update itself

We only have a land line for our Tivo and Direct TV and we only pay $15.00 for a basic phone line through AT&T. You should check into that and we only pay $5.00 a month for the Tivo through Direct TV. We have our unplugged regularily as there isn't a jack near the tv.We plug it in like about once a month or longer to get updates and stuff. So you start with the phone coming to get a cheaper plan and then see if you can start saving some cash there. Good Luck

you do not could desire to hook up with the TiVo provider in any respect as long as you're prepared to apply the TiVo as a VCR and set it to checklist manually, as in Channel 11 for one hour beginning at 9:00. in case you have cable internet (i'm assuming which you do not have DSL while you at the instant are not getting a telephone), your TiVo can replace over the internet. I replace my TiVo over our cable modem via skill of our on the spot modem.

Phone line should not be an extra fee. Look into your billing with your phone provider. I have Tivo too and do not pay extra phone costs.

Your TIVO would not work after that.
