Say something totally off the wall and kinda absurd or offensive... it usually works....

I had this New Yorker chick my neighbor was dating talking about how much she remodeled her NYC apartment for just because I was coming up the stairs with a new vanity... bad enough I had to deal with the NYC accent, but then I also had to deal with a blowhard that wanted to compete... so I just said "yeah, I hope to install a bedet too so that I can wash my balls whenever I want to and not have to take a shower each time"... that pretty much cut the converstation short considering I just met her

I ususally avert my eye contact and then subtley change the subject. Not a drastic change in subject, something somewhat still related to the conversation, but not so focused on the person.

I am a smart *** and I have actually said this -

"Well, could you be any more dull?"

There is no further boredom after that comment. The offenders have always, without fail, laughed and thought me to be very clever.

Go figure!

They are not only dull but dimwitted - thinking that I am making a joke.

Say thats really interesting, but you don't want to take up all their time, and that you really need to check up on ??? babysiter, office etc or the old stand must use the loo.... but you take the risk they might offer to follow you in!

I would use something said in their conversation to create an immidiate "oh my gosh.. that reminds me" excuse. For example:
If they are talking about their pets ... you say "OH my gosh! That just reminds me... I HAVE TO call and make a vet appointment for my dog!!" I'm sorry, can you please excuse me?" That way, you seem as though you were interested in talking, but it reminded you of something you have got to do that second.... which kindly removes you from the conversation. :-)

I always pretend that my cell phone is vibrating and then say that it's a really important call and I have to go or I just tell them I have a doctor's appointment.
