As for those who think it is untrue, here is the link to the page about Kelly, who has never been found.

I became aware of the story when I saw Dateline NBC's 2-hour special called "A Touch of Evil."

Christian mythology permeates our society causing unknown widespread injustice.
Just look at how the O'Hare murder was handled. The cops sat on their a$$es because she was an outspoken atheist.

There is no "devil".
There were lots of urban legends in the 70s and 80s and even into the 90s about "satanic ritual murders" and the like, with very little ever panning out. It wouldn't at all be surprising to find that this was just another set of disturbed violent people, and that the satanism story was tacked on later by fundamentalists (look at how often they accuse people here of being satanists or inspired by satan).
Alternatively, it could be true that the people who committed the crimes thought of themselves as satanists.
Either way we atheists get to stand outside the fray. The problem here is clearly tied to belief in the supernatural. We're obviously innocent with respect to that.

It's not a question of atheism or Christianism, or even Satanism. It's about common sense and law. The "Satanic Panic" was started in the 80's by a bunch of paranoid fundies who didn't like the hard rock music their kids were listening to. There were several cases like this in the U.S. and invariably they were all found to have nothing to do with cults or Satan or even Christians. The FBI ultimately concluded in the mid-1990's that there was no evidence that any sort of underground Satanic Cult existed in this country, nor in any other that they were aware of.
It's all hype, it has nothing to do with religion.

One of the biggest myths out there is that children don't lie. They're always honest. A two-year-old knows that to avoid getting in trouble, they can fib.
Many of these stories get started by over zealous "grown ups" believe these murder and abuse cases and cover them with the Satan label.
Objectivity and neutrality is the key to discovering the truth.

It should only frighten you if you live in a small town in the South. I do and I have heard as bad if not worse than this story. There is nothing worse than evil masquerading as righteousness.

Why the athiest contingent? I don't get it. Are you saying this is evidence for the existence of Satan? I don't believe Satan exists.

the story is a bit silly, it's very nice to say that evil is involved, seems like attorney was very lazy to dig deeper and to search more thoroughly

What is there to say?
I'm a native born, 5th generation Texan (not counting my native American heritage) and I find nothing unusual about redneck Texans claiming "Satan did it" or, "the devil made me do it."
