The issue is not the spirits themselves but the impurities and mixers that accompany them.

It's not the mixing or alcohol - it's the amount that you take in. If you start with beer and get a nice buzz, then when you switch to something stronger like liquor that packs a stronger punch, then you won't have the faculties to judge how drunk you are getting. You'll keep drinking at the same rate as you were drinking the beer/wine, but you'll be drinking something 3 times as strong.

The problem is that whiskey and wine have a higher alcohol volume than beer. If you drink a few beers, it will take a while for the alcohol to enter your system, however the harder alcohol will hit you first. So when the beer begins to have it's effect, the combined amount of alcohol can make you sick.

They all have different kinds of alcohol, prepared with different ingredients. Spirits like Vodka are more pure. Beer is the lower alcohol content, then wine, then whiskey

Yes, the alcohol is what makes you drunk. It's everything else in the drinks that, when mixed, gets you nice and sick.
...and the one I remember:
Hard before beer, in the clear.
Beer before hard, in the yard.

Check out the recipes for an AMF. Similar to a Long Island Iced Tea in terms of liquor - probably have to get at a bar unless you want to shell out $50+ to get bottles of all the ingredients. Thinking about it, I actually think Jungle Juice is the best tasting drink I've had, and it packs a punch. Again, lots of ingredients for this, usually made for party or group settings.

because wine, whiskey and beer aren't spirits, you only use spirits to mix drinks with. Vodka goes well with anything because it's a neutral spirit.

It is the quantities that are drunk.
Because Beer is sold in Pints (in Scotland anyway) your body adjusts for the intake of this large amount of fluid. when you switch to whisky your body takes awhile to adjust from the pintage mode to nip mode so the alcohol enters your bloodstream quicker. This also explains why nips to beer is ok

i always heard it as :
beer before liquor, never sicker.
liquor before beer, you're in the clear.
the person who told me this said it had something to do with the increasing amount of alcohol in the drink, like stepping up would make you sick.
i think it's all garbage, personally.
