You need a business plan - try contacting your local office for business support or small businesses. You will especially need this if you want to borrow money to set up the business.
For your kind of small business, you would need a premises licensed for food preparation and you would probably both need food hygiene certification.
You would also need public liability insurance - this is incase someone sued you or you gave someone food poisoning or anything like that.
Apart from that you'd need a suitable vehicle and to do lots of advertising and getting a clientele base.

Make sure you are precise about what you are going to offer and try to make it as different and better than your competition.
Make sure you have comitted and reliable staff if you are using any.
Look at the competition make sure what you are offering is in the the right price bracket. Do as much research a s possible on the best marketing vehicles i.e local papers local web sites and so forth work out how much you can afford to spend on publicity other expenses and what you expect to come in over the first year ( this is a business plan) make sure you have the logistics to get yourselves and implements to the venues.
Just think of your business as a gear box if one cog does not turn niether will the wheels to push you forward.
Its not all but its a start - enjoy yourself

Plan out everything; the restaurant business is one of the hardest to be successful at and every decision you make is an important one. First off, make sure you have a great location. Customers do not want to make it a pain in the *** to get to your place or to find parking. Second, feature food that people want and can't get; any buffett restaurant can feature "this and that", feature food and drinks that no one can get in your area. Third, and equally important, is good service. Even though you have people serving themselves, you still want to make sure that plates are clean and the help staff is warm and delightful.

You need lots of equipment i.e. trays etc....Seek out your local catering auctions as you can pick up really good stuff at a fraction of cost...set up a web site and also do as has been suggested about leaflet drops....BUT the main thing you MUST do first is take your basic food hygeine cert...your local college or brewery will be able to advise where you can do it...it only takes a morning. You will get asked to produce this certificate, especially with businesses.

Good for you! Design some leaflets on your computer and post them in the door of every business your can find. I know loads of companies who have buffet food delivered for conference meetings etc. Be ahead of the game for Xmas in particular for the end of work office parties. Good luck!
