No dog is a good outside dog. A dog cannot protect your house when it is stuck in the backyard or tied up. A robber will just walk around it, or throw some poisoned meat to it to get it out of the way. The robber will be nice and safe from your guard dog while he is in your house and the dog is outside. A dog will wake you up and protect you much better being inside with you.
Please, keep your dog inside. The dog and you will be much safer for it. Try doing a pet search on http://www.petfinder.com on the left hand side. Breed doesn't matter. But you will want to make sure that it is great with kids.

If you want something that will discourage people from coming near your yard-you want a Rottweiler or Mastiff.. These are some of the gentlest giants out there but for some reason people are intimidated by them..I would definitely pick one of these over a German shepherd-In my experience they are not nearly as good with children. The best idea would be to call the shelters around you and find a rottie or mastiff mix-One of the sweetest dogs I've ever met was a mastiff/lab mix from a shelter. Of course Goldens and Labs are always good with kids too but are not nearly as intimidating..

Norwegian Elkhound. Looks like a cross between a husky and a shephard. About 50~60lbs. Never bred to be agressive so great with kids. Had both a Male and a Female and NEVER had any problems. They have both since passed away (at 13 and 12 yrs. old ) They are bred to BARK though and can bark literally for hours. They were meant to hunt elk and would trap the elk and bark until the hunter shot the elk. So if you have deer in your area, you'll have lots of barking going on.
Easily trainable and eager to please. Lovable and loves to be brushed, (needs it too, short hair but thick undercoat, makes it great for outdoors,) makes great bonding time.
If you are getting a strictly outdoor dog, not coming into the house, suggest getting two. Dogs can and will become agressive when isolated since they are pack animals. Good luck, Oh they were also great with my little Chihuahua and 2 kids.

Chow-Chows are very good for protecting. But they are "homebodies" meaning they will bond with the people they around 24/7 and be a wonderful pet, but outsiders... even though u may want them in ur home, they tend to be a bit over protective. I had one that would stand between me and the door and would not let whoever it was in until I told him it was ok. Ching was a great dog. But if u dont want this problem. steer more towards a st. bernard. something friendly, but big... Im pretty sure a robber would get the pic!!!

That's a hard question... it's so hard to get a good balance. I know in Australia, there is currently a wave of dog attacks on small children but most of the dogs seem to be pitbull terriers and mastiffs so probably not the best breeds.
I would say a German Shepherd myself. As long as you are prepared to make sure the dog and kids are properly socialised together before leaving them alone?
Sometimes a yappy dog is just as good as a large dog... how many theives are going to break into a house that has a dog constantly yapping at them, drawing peoples attention?
Good luck with it all! :)

I would advise that you don't get something already grown that is a naturally a big dog(rottweilers, dobermans) I do suggest that you
would get a German Shepard which protective of it's home yet is very affectionate. Akitas or Huskies or mix of the two would make anyone think twice. In short big loving dogs are the ones.

I dont approve of totally outside dogs. They tend to not be socialized which can make them dangerous.Any dog present can discourage burglars. Most of them fear small dogs more than big ones. Small ones are quicker to bite. Get a medium sized dog with a deep bark. Keep him inside as part of the family and you will have a protective dog and a good pet too.

I have a collie who is wonderful with my kids, when someone she doesn't know comes around the house she gets angry...she wouldn't even let my brother in law in the back yard when we weren't home...it was actually really funny because he was returning my car and accidently threw his keys over the fence instead of mine...
If you are unsure about what kind of dog to get check with the pound, they will be able to give you an idea of each dogs temperment and if you adopt one then you will be saving a life...and the dog will love you forever!
Blessed Be!

I would suggest a Boxer. I have been raised around them all my life and they are very protective. I had one with my daughters and he would pull them in their little red wagon, when he got tired he would turn them over. I never had to worry about them being home alone (11 & 9), I knew that he would give his life for them or anyone in our family.
I have a 8 month old flashy brindle, and he looks as if he is going to be protective as well. I wanted one who could stay in the house and be outside as well, since my husband passed away I wanted some protection besides a gun.

the best dogs i would recommend would be a great dane, they are really huge and look menacing but are really good with kids and humans they have a nasty loud bark that would scare anyone off! Another dog is the staffordshire bull terrier absolutely brilliant with kids and look mean because they are so muscular and strong. not too good at barking at the door, as a guard dog but are clever enough to be taught what to do if an intruder or anyone was to go near you, you train them with a command to go at someone and they will, but only at your command. But they are great dogs with humans. good luck.
