There is no country that does not need democracy. What the Iraqis are resisting is the American kind of democracy it wants to enforce in Iraq. If you observed properly you will notice that the first set of elections conducted in Iraq was a collegate one. The voters were handpicked and that was what set the tone for the present hostilities.

The American action was seen as a sign of dubious intention and the tendency to impose some set of people on the citizenry. The second unfortunate situation was the boycott of elections by the Sunnis who are in majority in Iraq. Unfortunately for them they paid the price and have been relegated to the background instead of the pridal position they thought they should occupy. They thought they could snub America and the world by boycotting the elections. They are angered at the turn of events and resort to violence which i believe would never solve their problems. In the end the most lives that are lost in Iraq are that of Iraqis, who would have contributed tremendously towards rebuilding Iraq. The American government should have as a matter of political policy, placated them and at least get them participating to the extent that a reasonable number of them do not boycott the political process. But I dont know how well Americans understood this situation. They should have waited and allow a government of National Unity to continue for sometime before calling for votes. Voting should have happened when the people are relatively calm and listening. But the Ameicans were in a hatse to run and they found themselves in a reccuring situation due to their poor judgement of political situations in Iraq. As far as I am concerned that shows how naive the present administration is politically.

Other than this Iraqis want democracy, because apart from the fact that it grant you freedom, it gives one that sence of relevance and importance. The mere feelings that i have exercise my right to choose who should govern me gives one more sense of belonging, commitment and responsiblity.

Once Iraq is a democracy, America and other western nations can force their will on Iraqis through imperialistic policies. Thus becoming a pupper of the US, much like the Shah of Iran in the 1970's.

Why do people keep on insisting this is like Vietnam? Its isn't and if you knew anything about vietnam you wouldn't say that. Now in regards to the Iraqi people, they do have a right to live and not be slaughtered or brutally tortured by their leader, his sons or his henchmen. We have not ask Iraq to set up a democracy in our image, the one they set up is quite different than ours, but that is okay. As long as they are free to vote for their officials and are free to practice their religion, free to attend college if they chose, free to live if they lose at the olympics, free to not see your family not drug off in the middle of the night, free to not be a part of one of the many many mass graves.
So my question back to you is why the hell you can't seem to understand this? Our soldiers do. signed AF veteran

The Bush administration has no intention of establishing democracy in the middle east. It's all a ruse. The neo cons want to instill fear in Americans and make us think that the Islamics are taking over the world, and that they intend to invade America any day now.

A lot of the soldiers I've talked to don't think we will win and the Iraqis are killing themselves and Americans . It's becoming a Civil War and we're right in the middle .

Because there is a worship of democracy, when the irony is that the US is a republic.

If Iraq wants freedom, Iraqis should have initiated it.

don s, you are forgiven. =)

Iraq is living in an age gone by. By introducing the Democratic system, we provide them the tools to advance themselves. Just because they have not had a Democracy in thousands of years does not mean they cannot have one, only a Socialist or Comunist thinks that way. Eventually the radicals will stop the bombing and attacking and begin to take up positions of Political power to press forward their views.

The question is: Which is worse? Suicide Bomber or radical muslim politician?

I honestly can't answer that. The elections that followed the ousting of Saddam were something completely foreign to the Iraqi people and it was their only option. The constant fighting between Shiites & Sunni's makes me think they may not want a democratic government like we have.

You evidently don't know what Democracy means .Does" give me liberty or give me death" ring a bell ? We are so spoiled here in America , and have taken for granted the privileges that no other country possesses. The people that bash are presidents no matter what party they are should be ashamed of themselves. It's way past time for this country to grow up and start showing some appreciation for what we do have . Doesn't something down deep inside of you wonder why people risked their life's to come to this country? All you spoiled brats should live in Iraq.Maybe that would make you have a different view of things.
