... all i was doing was blowing my nose?
I was in the checkout line when this woman's few bits fell to the ground and rolled over beside her. While this happened i was blowing my nose cos i have a bit of a cold today... when she finished her transaction, she turned around vengefully and said I had no bloody manners to pick her shopping off the floor and that it was a shame my mother never taught me manners! I was so shocked at her comment i didn't even have time to absorb what happened by which time she marched right out of the supermarket!
In hindsight, my mum would have said- don't touch anyone's stuff if you've just blown your nose.... some people don't like that. So what was rude about me not picking her codswallop off the floor?

Was it an old woman? I find them to be amongst the grumpiest and rudest people on the planet... and what's worse, they feel they have a right to be.
Be content that you rose above it and did not react. That's what they want.

You were all right - she did not understand the fact that you had been previously brought up to respect Public Health principles - she was also right as she expected you to have some manners to assist when you can. The problem was that there was a communication breakdown. She blasted you without giving you the chance to explain yourself and you felt bad about it. I would say that it is a question of miscommunicaton and nothing ill intended. From your explanation she may be the type that does not give people a chance to explain themselves when something has happened or does not give a benefit of the doubt. We have such people around and you should not feel bad about yourself but hold your head high that your mama taught you some manners that you intend to keep! Sorry about the incident.

Sounds to me like a lady who thinks she is above all others and that everyone else should be at her beckon call - what was wrong with her picking up her dropped items??? Personally I dont think you were rude at all - sounds like this woman was having a bad day - or is just like that everyday?? If I were you I probably would have done the same thing only if I thought she hadnt noticed her items had fallen off I probably would have told her about it but having just blown my nose wouldnt have touched them myself.

The best bit about this question is that you have obviously been raised to be a nice person. I feel that had you not been blowing your nose you would have retrieved the lady's shopping. Don't let it get to you though, there are some very ignorant people out there ~ and they not all young.

Your right not to pick up her groceries- I would have been more upset if you had after blowing your nose- she's obviously a bitter lady with no manners herself. If you see her again make her drop her groceries again and sneeze all over them! Then i'm sure she wouldn't mind. Some people are just silly love.

I suppose you could have asked her if you could help her pick up her crap that she dropped, but in reality she dropped the items so she should shut up and pick them up herself. She certainly had no right to expect anyone to do it for her. She is the one without manners !
I would have probably followed her outside and tipped her whloe cart over in the parking lot and then laughed at her ! That would have shown her what rude is really all about !

I know I wouldn't want someone who was just blowing their nose picking up my groceries. I think it was more polite of you to think of her, before spreading your germs. So don't feel bad, you totally did the right thing, and she was rude for mean-muggin' you. Um, what's codswallop?

because if your looking for rude or stroppy people, just venture down to the local supermarket, where people shop but hate doing it. Some people expect help for the slightest thing, should have told her to be more independant with her learned helplessness!

You followed proper ettiquette. Your mother is correct in saying that it is rude to groceries after sneezing. This woman was probably just angry and bitter and you made for an easy target. Forget about her, she isn't worth the energy.
