I have to agree with Dr. Watson. I presume this has been an assignment. But I have trouble with the question, too, in that neither artist tried to convey an emotion via forethought in the portraiture...that is, no conscious decision for a viewer to believe any one emotion or set of emotions directed the painting. Ergo, they were not TRYING to convey an emotion, they were attempting to resolve their own emotional response to the stark white canvas and the paint that went on it. Any emotion that a viewer experiences is quite incidental and superfluous. It is up to you to decide what emotion YOU feel when looking at the lines and colours. But it is quite worthless to attempt to guess at what either artist felt at the time of the painting, and who cares? It is not about the artist, it is about the painting and YOUR reaction to it.

Sounds to me like you are a student who has been given an assignment and instead of doing your own research and coming up with your own conclusions you're wanting us to do it for you.

I have a better idea. Why don't you tell us what emotions you think each portrait is conveying?
