my boyfriend and I are looking at going over Xmas, a very busy period for Thailand. So we want to avoid (as much as possible) all the touristy/hectic places where natural beauty and laid back atmosphere have been replaced with money grabbing resorts and restaurants. We dont mind whether its difficult to reach or has basic facilities and no electricity as long as we can spent some relaxing time together away from the Western civilisation and close to the sea. I come from a popular Greek island myself and know how hard it is for a foreign traveller to get to original places, breaking through the tourist facade..

My partner and I found a great beach in Thailand. You had to get 2 boats to get there (making a change in the middle of the sea) and it was just the most chilled out and relaxed place ever. Absolutely gorgeous beaches and views and the most relaxed atmosphere ever. I fell in love with it and we have vowed to go back one day.

However, I can't tell you where it is, because then loads of tourists will end up there and it will be spolit.

Avoid, Ko Phi Phi. Its turned into something a bit like Ibiza. Its crowded and noisy and pretty pricey thesedays. I've always avoided Ko Samet simply because i've always assumed that it is a tourist hell-hole but I spoke to some friends who had a very relaxing time on a secluded part of the island. Its a big island so you could probably find something suitable.

Ko Pagn Nagn is very noisy unless you head to the north of the island. But again, at christmas its likely to be quite busy. Even in the North.

My favourite place is Ko samet. Here's a little map: http://www.travelfish.org/map_detail/thailand/eastern_thailand/rayong/ko_samet/31 If you avoid the main beaches round the top of the island and go for some of the quieter ones (19-26 and then right at the bottom) then you'll have a great chilled time. You also have the added advantage of not being too far away from some bars should the desire to be a bit touristy grab you.

The best thing about Ko Samet is that its close to Bangkok. You don't want to spend your hard earned holiday travelling too much. You can get a open-return minibus trip from the Khao San Rd to Ko Samet for only a few 100 Baht which includes the boat. It will take 3 hours.

If you want something even more isolated I'd recommend going to the south west. There are some great islands right down by the malaysian border that not too many people go to.

Better still, go to Laos. I recomment the 4000 Islands in Si Pan Donh (check spelling) Its in the south of Laos near cambodia. There's soem great little islands in the wide section of the mekong. They were beautiful and very very relaxing.

Enjoy your trip. I'm going in October. Its my 10th time to SE Asia... I love it.

My fiancee and I just spent a wonderful weekend in Krabi. It's not an island, but it is a town on the coast. It can be touristy, but the resort we stayed in was VERY nice. It was right on the beach, very private and nice. It is not near the town, so you basically stay at the resort the whole time, but prices are low and it is very relaxing and calm. I reccomend it quite highly. As for a young couple, I am 21 and my fiancee is 20, so unless you are much younger than that...
Not the place if you are looking for partying or shopping, but definately the place to relax...
It's called the Tubkaak Resort, and it is just a few miutes outside Krabi town. Good luck

Dont go to Samui..its a tourist mecca, although very nice, its over run with starbucks, mcdonalds, and even worse, now has timeshare sellers bothering you as you walk down the street.
I would suggest Koh Nang Yuan, which is a small Island a boat ride away from Koh Tao, and reachable by boat from either Koh Samui (1 and half hours) or Chumpon on the Mainland, about same distance by boat.
There are no roads or traffic, just lovely beaches and a range of bungalows to stay in depending on your taste and requirement. Its very lush, and is surrounded by a coral reef, so you do get a few divers coming in, but at night it is a very nice setting, without any rowdyness. If your happy spending time in each others company, and dont want a lot of varied things to do, this might suit you.

I'm a regular visitor to Thailand and, like you, much prefer the less spoilt areas of the country. I would recomend staying on Ko Lanta - It's a very friendly place which has not yet been engolfed by tourists; a lovely place to stay is the treehouse - very friendly and relaxing with great food. Ko Chang is also very nice and unspoilt but you would have to have malaria medication if you were to go there. Have a lovely time - I'm very envious! :-)

Koh Phagnan is a lovely quiet island, despite it's infamous full moon party. There are very nice quiet places there too, namely had yow. I reccomend Over the Bay bungalows, a nice quiet bungalow resrt sitting in the mountainside and 2 mins to the beach. Spectacular views - perfect!! thailandtimmy@yahoo.co.uk for more helful advice ! I live in Koh Samui bye the way

Staying on the mainland, once you get south of Pranburi - there are all these lovely coves w/not much more than a fisherman village and a sometimes a small resort.. try Baan Saphan.. I was there on a weekday and there were no tourists on the beach in any direction.. it is a timeless experience..

Koh Samui, you would have to take a ferri ride there. Its a little fishing village, and its the most beautiful place I've ever visited. Believe me, I was born in Thailand, and I its been my favorite for years. Nice beaches, with local bars and resteraunts and bungalows. Some beaches are very secluded and some have tons of tourist, theres a beach for every one there. Also, there is pretty good shopping there too.
Have fun, it will be one of the best trips you ever take!!
p.s. remember to buy ONLY bottled water

Head to east Thailand to Trat. Stay in Ko Chang or Ko Kud. Generally locals and not many tourists.

Why not try Langkawi in Malaysia a area with 104 tropical island, fur sure you will find a almost empt beach.

Beaches /weather are as nice at Thailand but much less main stream tourist.
