Act Immediately as follows: (website link below)
Lost or stolen passport
You must report a lost or stolen passport to us as soon as you can so that it can be cancelled. If this is not done, someone else may try to travel on your passport or use your identity illegally in some other way. If your passport was lost or stolen abroad you should contact the local police. You should also report the missing passport to the nearest British embassy, consulate or high commission. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office can give you their contact details. You will also have to fill in a lost and stolen declaration form (LSO1). You can do this on line by clicking here. If your passport was lost or stolen in the UK, you must report this to us. All cases of theft must also be reported to your local police station. You must insert the crime reference details in the relevant section of the declaration of loss/theft form (LS01), which you will need to complete and return to us. To obtain a form, or fill in a form online, please click here.
In either case we recommend that you apply for a replacement passport as soon as possible. You can apply to us for a replacement passport as long as you are a British national and also a UK resident and in the UK at the time you are applying.

If you are in a foreign country you must go to the police and report it stolen immediately. You will need your passport number (I hope you have it written down somewhere)
You must thenb go to your local British Embassy or Consul and request a replacement. I am not sure of costs but your embassy will tel you.
If you are still in the UK, the same process applies but once you have reported it stolen then you mst reapply to the passport office filling in the appropriate parts of the form for a stolen passport.
As long as you report it stolen then in the hands of someone else, it will show up on the system somewhere.
Good Luck, this has happened to me before and it sucks.

I agree with the other posts. If you are abroad contact the British consul - in future photocopy your passport and keep the photocopy somewhere seperate - it makes this situation so much easier! You must report this immediately especially during the current climate - if your identity is linked to illegal immigration or terrorism - oh boy will that be bad!!!!!

Yes, passports are very valuable. It is important that you report it to the police.
I believe the prior poster noted where you can get a new one.

It costs 51 quid to replace, 71.50 if you want the replacement in one week.
It is dangerous if someone else has your passport. It's wonderful tool to use for identity fraud (clear out your bank account, apply for credit cards in your name, get into the UK illegally, etc.)

report it to the police, then apply for a new one (take the police report with you).... if you are in another country, go to the embassy, if you are in your own country, just go to your passport office/ or where ever you get passports....

first report police dept, better your resident area> immediately visit and get counsel from home office, while if you can hire a solicitor that are correct steps to do. please do not forget to get reference slips or numbers about your complaint or counsel,
next avoid to visit city or public places unnecessarily. perhaps you might get it. if it's reach in on good human hands.
