Boiling water will kill the germs in it, but does nothing about chemical contaminants. If you believe your water is polluted, you can pass it through an activated charcoal filter (Amway, Brita, others). Filter before boiling.

I would boil it to sterilize if I were you. I don't know if there is any pharmaceutical product to sterilize drinking water (there probably is) but I wouldn't trust it not to cause some other unwanted side effect.

You can add a little liquid bleach, not much, but I don't remember how much. Ask a reference librarian. They know how to find anything. If you boil the water, that will drive all the dissolved air out, which will make the water taste flat. Put it in a jar, but don't fill it all the way up, then shake it to get some dissolved air back in. Cheers!

The easiest way to sterilize water is to boil it for at least two minutes. There are also sterilization tablets available on the market, but I still believe that boiling is better.

Cholera in New York? I Freakin' doubt it.
But if you are worried, boil for AT LEAST 10 minutes.
Or, go to a camping supply type store and ask for water purification tablets and the follow the directions on the package.

Boil it. Small amount of bleach. Cholera in NY? Man, keep it up there, the rest of the world doesn't need it. Hasn't your city heard of processing the water?

You can go to a sports outfitters store to buy items that hikers use to sterilize water when out in unknown territory. In the meantime buy five gallon bottles of drinking water.

Hey there, not sure about pharmaceutical products, but if you go to http://www.travelsmith.com they have a wand type thing that you can insert into a glass of water and it sterilizes it.

Boil it for several minutes (5-10) and then chill it in the fridge for drinking water later.

Select a non-swivel tap - remove aerators and other attachments from your tap
Disinfect the end of the faucet with a bleach-water mix
Run cold tap water for two or three minutes, then run your drink water...
