Begin house training in earnest when a puppy is about 12-14 weeks old. Before then, a dog does not have full bladder and bowel control. However, you can begin establishing a routine as soon as you bring your puppy home. Don't ever hit a puppy for accidents. You'll frighten or confuse the puppy if you do so. Never punish a puppy after the fact. Remember, a puppy thinks it is being punished for whatever it is doing at the time of your correction. The same thinking applies to rubbing a puppy's nose in his or her mistakes -- don't do it. The pup is not capable of making the reasoning leap that this is an area previously soiled, and that's why you are punishing. Dogs are oriented to the present.

I have seen small breed dogs take up to a year or more to house train. Here is a good site: http://leerburg.com/housebrk.htm

Read up on crate training!! It's not cruel when used properly, dogs are den animals by nature!

depends on the pup but he should be getting the idea by now, althoug hes still pretty young so will have accidents, how are u training him?
i always put newpaper down in the kitchen off a night time
of a day time i take them outside at very regular intervals, to a certain spot in the garden adn use a word to tell them to toilet (i say 'do pee pees' in a really high voice so they recognise it)
when they go i give them so much praise, point really close to what they did so they associate it, pet them etc, (I dont use food)
and I do this every hour or so when they are little, Soon they will associate the voice and word with what they are supposed to be doing
of a morning when i come in the room and the paper is dirty i dont say anything, just clean it up
they will quickly get the idea that toileting outside is good, inside not so good.
Please dont rub its nose in it, thats cruel and they dont associate it with being wrong, just ubeing cruel.

Training a puppy at this age is not that difficult-you just have to be repetitive and on a timely schedule. My puppy was trained within the first two weeks-but we were redundent on taking her out every two hours.although she might have accidents during the training period-never scold her or hit her for it-just tell her no and take her out ,even after her accident so she gets the hang of you need her to do her business outside. walking her in the same area until she gets the idea really helps out alot.Make for certain that you praise her well when she does go out-that gives them more incentive than anything just to want to please their master. Good luck!!!

depends on the breed and your commitment and consistancy

some breeds are smarter and learn quicker than others (typically also pups from pet stores take longer) - a Shih Tzu for example takes longer than a more intelligent Rottie

10 weeks is a tad too early to expect a pup to be housetrained - but you can start now by CRATE TRAINING
this means the pup is in a crate at night or when you cannot watch it.. the crate is NEVER used for punishment (also rubbing their nose in it is not a good idea)
first thing in the morning you dont talk to the pup just get it outside to pee.. you have to go out EVERYTIME and have a soft treat reward and offer it immediately.. then in to eat.. then out to run and poop (running stimulates the bowls) again you must go out with the pup...
keep an eye on it throughout the day (even on leash if you must) if it starts to sniff the ground and circle like its getting ready to pee or poop - back out and you go to....
feed supper at 6 pm.. remove uneaten food at 7pm.. remove water at 9 pm (or 2 hours before bed) outside again before bed...
again 10 weeks is too young to expect much but start now anyhow and be consistant

better food means less poops, grocery store and wal mart foods are all CRAP

it took me ages, i found that the only thing that worked was crate training but this only works if the puppy does not like to mess in its sleeping area. all depends on whether you are able to notice the signs they need to go and how quickly they pick up the skills
