The General Glover in Swampscott, Massachusetts, is an incredible restaurant known for its roast beef (rib roast) and popovers. The atmosphere is great and the service excellent. The food is outstanding, and their "eat all the roast beef you want" policy insures you NEVER leave hungry. For its ambiance, service and food, I would rate The General Glover the BEST restaurant I have ever eaten at.
Chow!!

The Fisherman's Lodge in Jesmond Dene, Newcastle upon Tyne. NE7 7BQ
Tel 0191 281 3281
Serves mainly seafood.
It's the only restaurant in Jesmond Dene. It's expensive, but the food is delicious. It's the kind of place that you dress up to go to.
It's in the middle of the Dene, so surrounded by woodland.
Another very good restaurant (still a little bit pricey)in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne is the Mandalay which serves Asian/pacific food.

The questioner asked in The North East of England!
There are loads of cheap places in Newcastle - go to www.yell.com and check out what type of food you are looking for. Everything is catered for; Chinese, Indian, pub, Japanese, Italian..but it helps to book ahead.
Good luck and don't eat too much!
