What are the long-term effects that someone with cerebral ataxia (caused by an underdeveloped cerebellum) could expect to encounter? Conditions (general lack of balance and difficulty with some speech) currently do not seem to be changing for the better or worst, although patient thinks they are getting worse. Patient is approximately 30 years of age. Is a "normal" lifespan probable? Thanks!

What I think you mean is cerebellar ataxia rather than cerebral ataxia.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to give you any further specific details because cerebellar ataxia is actually not one disease - it is a symptom of MANY neurological diseases, in some it is a minor feature and in others it is a major feature. Furthermore, depending on the cause cerebellar ataxia may be completely stable or may progress rapidly, or may just very slowly deteriorate.

As I said there are many many causes, including a lot of different genetic diseases (spinocerebellar ataxias 1 - 17, DRPLA, ataxia telangiectasia, friedreich's ataxia, etc etc), alcohol overuse, drug side effects, trauma, cerebellar stroke. For many of these conditions a normal lifespan is expected.

However, I'm afraid as is usually the case with healthcare related questions the only advice that I can give is to see your neurologist. Medical investigations can give a much clearer idea of the exact cause and sometimes pick up a very specific diagnosis and it is much more reliable to predict prognosis on that basis.

Sorry I can not be of more direct help, but hopefully the above information will be useful.

No, and rather frankly everybody who tells you in any different case merits a a quick backhanded fist around the mouth***for merchandising an outright con to desperate human beings....I hate those varieties with a definite vehemence. particularly few components flow the blood recommendations barrier - it fairly is between the toughest to flow borders on the plant. decrease than everyday situations, it is an particularly stable element, although, through fact of this after there's a concern that consequences the worried equipment it rather is rather annoying to handle - that applies to any concern that consequences the worried equipment: melancholy, epilepsy. etc. situations that effect the decrease extra primitive parts of the recommendations are extra stable to handle nonetheless - those may be the parts of the recommendations that administration respiratory, heart cost, co-ordination, sleep, etc. between the flaws that makes it so confusing, different than for having numerous layers of membranes and cells that act like "filter out paper" removing drugs and something that would desire to effect the recommendations, is that the outcomes of the remedies themselves in the event that they do get with the aid of tend to offer undesirable area consequences AS a factor of what they are meant to do (for occasion, seizure drugs decelerate electric activity in a factor of the recommendations, although, wakeful concept is electric activity interior the recommendations - and human beings on seizure drugs could have a real annoying time questioning quickly) so I do delight in that many of the neurological meds might nicely be rather nasty...yet as a count of actuality, very few of the intentionally designed molecules designed in a lab flow the blood recommendations barrier - the only ones in nature that do are abused as drugs (opium poppy, cocaine, etc)
