This is a serious question.Otherwise, all our brilliant programmers will become just a BPO/Call centre employees.I understand you can not break the monopoly of established players but they also had one or the other challenge when they started.Otherwise we have to comeup with a different computing model. All these companies are able to utilise our talent but there is no such opportunity in India.Already there is not much scope for serious programmers in India as people working on packages like SAP,Peoplesoft,JD Edwards,Nokia etc are getting very high pay package. This is a catch 22 situation.Do you think it is possible?.

Yea its possible, i aint an indian though but i understand you, there are reasons behind the lack of big It related companies in india
1 The side which most third world countries turn towards developed countries e.g US .
2. Not all people would like to establish a firm in their country because of the low economy of the country, they rather go to other big countries and establish.
3. Lack of finance, if indians were to launch an OS, can you mention a sponsor? Writing an OS requires good programmers who are ready to work under the condition that they get paid constantly.
4. Time, the time it takes to write big applications is much, thereby no programmer would want to waste his time so far he has other fruitful things to do with his time.

To the best of my understanding

It should be obvious to all the people to this time that the Indian minds race faster than the others when it comes to the technical arena. I was deeply hurt by Michael's taunt. It feels bad to know the knowledge of such people and their misconduct. Check out Wikipedia and you will know that even Gates had copied his OS for IBM from some other person.
Now to the answer, surely. Its surely possible for us. I don't know much about Pakistan's capabilities (other than their ambitious nuclear ones), but they should be able too( with some american help!). There are many professionals in Microsoft and Linux who belong to Indian roots. They can pave the way for future 'chalaka sanstha's' just as some of NASA technicians started ISRO. I promise today that if I become a computer engineer, I would definately try do this cause.
According to me, the things that stop up from doing this are:
1)Lack of technicians who would quit the lucrative jobs for Desh Seva.
2)Lack of interest because we are not in any dire need for it, we easily get what we want from Mic. And Lin. Without any hassles.
3)Most of the software is made for Microsoft products, so there would be isolation of our OS.
4)Lack of funds to support the summit which would require top engineers to work for long hours without any product for some a long time.
But I am sure that India would surely feel proud for its OWN OS some day.
