it1s not only help to face fwd and straight,but it`s upper and lower rudder located behind the vertical stabilizer(vertical fin as u called)...to manouver aircraft in low and high speed...and also there`s a HF antena located on top of the fin

Ventral and dorsal fins on any aircraft are to keep the aircraft pointed forward, in the direction of flight. They act like a weathervane.
