I have been off work after having elective surgery almost two years ago. I had an injury at my job and it required surgery. I had been there for almost seven yrs, but when they knew I was going to have surgery, they started pressuring me about my performance. I felt it was unfair so I quit and had the surgery and did not even turn it in for workers comp.
I guess it has made me lose my self confidence and I have delayed looking for another position even tho I have lots of experience. Also, I am 50 and that has a part in me returning to the workforce. I feel I am at a huge disadvantage, I guess because in the field I previously worked, they had rather hire young people and train them, then keep a seasoned employee that was struggling. The field I was in was Insurance Sales of which I have about 10 yrs or more experience. It is just part of the business that it goes up and down and I was already struggling when all this happened. Was in top 350 of the co. the yr before.

I don't think it's self esteem you lack, you're not confident in yourself. You've worked at a place that did not encourage you to take advantage of their injury policies and instead of them helping you in your time of need they did the total opposite. They didn't see you as a value to their company. Regardless of age as long as you have the self confidence and the willingness to put forth the best you can be anyone can get back into the work field.

At fifty you are tired of the rat race. If you've been off work for two years, you may lack the motivation to go back, especially to the same old job. Your old job, selling insurance... (Snore) was probably not boring when you started, but who can do that for an eternity and not want to quit.

It sounds like all your problems would be solved if a big pile of money would simply fall from the sky so you'll never have to work again. But that is not likely to happen.

So..
Why not find something else to do.
Retrain for a new, exciting career.
Go back to school
Do some volunteer work. That might open the door to a new career or give you something to do while you're looking for a new career.
You're good at sales, find a product to sell on your own.
Start your own company.
Become a consultant.

Life is too short to be in limbo, find a new occupation. Start life all over again.

Try the lead book here. When you have a job that matches who you are, it's not a job it's a VOCATION, a CALLING. You'll not only have self esteem, you'll be excited to go to work.

The other related books on this link can be helpful, but I recommend starting w/ the first one. You might find it at your library.

You shouldn't have any trouble getting into a sales position; just about any agency would take you on a straight commission basis.
