Third party coverage (or Liability) pays for someone else's damage if you are at fault for an accident. Comprehensive coverage pays for damages to your vehicle due to various perils such as acts of God like fire, etc. You have to purchase that coverage for there to be coverage available for a loss such as that. Comprehensive is only for your car, not for other people's injuries or things like that. Not sure why there are so many responses saying that Comp. pays for medical bills or injured people, but it doesd not. At least not in the states; not sure where you are.

Comprehensive insurance covers damage to both your vehicle and any third party vehicle / or person in any accident or other circumstances - together with damage caused by fire - or loss of your vehicle by theft. Third Party, Fire and Theft - only covers damage to third party vehicles / or person - damage through fire and theft of the vehicle - it DOES NOT cover damage to your own vehicle.

third party fire and theft will only cover you if your car is stolen or catches fire or is hit by an insured driver whos details you obtain. it will not cover hit and runs own fault accidents and often glass replacement. fully comprehensive covers everthing hence the name, the differnce in cost may only be a few pound (on my car £356 tpft £390fc) but it is worth it if your car has any value. cars worth over £4000 must be insured fully comp

Third party liability - covers the cost incurred if you are legally liable for injury or damage to another person or their property, plus fire and theft cover. It will not pay for any damage incurred to your own car or person.
Comprehensive covers most eventualities.

TPFT provides only your basic legal cover and will ensure you recover costs in the event that someone else is responsible for damaging your car. Comprehensive covers it also when you trolley it yourself. The difference in real terms is the price - go Comprehensive only if you've a car worth worrying about.

Comprehensive insurance covers your vehicle for fire, theft, vandalism, deer hits. I have never heard of 3rd party fire and theft coverage and I have handled auto, etc... claims for over 10 years. 3rd Party coverage on your policy relates to liability coverages and others making a claim against your policy for damages that you cause while you are operating your vehicle.

Comprehensive insurance will pay for medical expenses too for the victims of accident besides repairing the damages of the vehicles. It also pays you in case of theft and fire of your vehicle.
Third party insurance will pay only for the mediclaims of the accident victim.
