If you live in the US, your employer can not deny you maternity leave. They don't have to pay you during this period, but they have to keep your position for you (there are a few exceptions allowed by the law, but in any case, you have to be accepted back at the same pay rate and similar position when the leave is over). The employer is also allowed to suspend your seniority while you are gone. The only thing that changes from employer to employer is the length of the allowed leave. The vast majority of maternity leaves are for 6 weeks. Also, fathers are legally allowed to take "paternity" leave under the same circumstances and with the same restrictions. If you are denied leave for your maternity, get a lawyer! Your employer will lose much more than you for 6 weeks if they don't allow your maternity leave. Good luck!

Most jobs don't offer paid maternity leave in the US. You need to look up the Family Medical Leave Act and see if you qualify for that. Your employer may be forced to give you 12 weeks if you qualify. You may just have to talk to them and make them understand that you do have to take some time off or find a new job.
Good Luck

No matter what you don't want to go back to work too early. Keep in mind, doctors usually won't let you go to work until at least 4 weeks after the baby is born. Also, your job is not legally allowed to have you work until you have the doctor's OK. If this means you lose out on your job, don't worry about it. There are plenty of ways to get help if you need it. If you have to find out how to go about getting unemployment. Also, if you qualify, Social Services will allow you to get TCA (Temporary Cash Assistance) for so long. You can get help don't put yourself at risk and don't give up that time you can spend bonding with your precious new baby!!!!!

If you can afford it, arrange to take leave without pay. Save all your vacation time in anticipation of needing it when the baby is born.
