Probably one of the biggest advantages and positive aspects to psychotherapeutic medications is that they allow people to see that many mental health conditions really are based on the fact that a chemical in the brain is imbalanced. It is very difficult for some people to see that most conditions are from this type of imbalance.
The downside is that people likely will need the medication to continue to balance out the chemical imbalances for life. It is hard to take people off of them completely. Also, people also have some not-so-good side effects to some of the medications. However, many of the newer drugs are engineered to diminish the risk of side effects for most people.
It is always good to go with a counseling approach first, and continue this throughout treatment with medication, if needed.
A good thing is, that once you can get the chemicals regulated and treated, it is very beneficial to a lot of people. No, it isn't a "cure", but it is a very good treatment for many people.

It is a poor workman who drives a nail with a wrench or removes screws with a crowbar. For best results use the proper tool for the job.
It is also said, "If your only tool is a hammer everything starts to look like a nail'
Many of the problems you go to a mental health professional for are not chemical imbalances, but rather are spiritual problems.
Chemical imbalance problems are best solved with chemical tools.
Spiritual problems are best solves with spiritual tools.
If you go to an expert at chemicals who has no expertise with spiritual problems, he will give you drugs because it is what he knows.
So you who used to just have a spiritual problem now have a chemical problem, addiction to the expensive drug you have been taught to need.
It is also true that powerful drugs have side effects.
Sometimes the side effects are about as hard to live with as that which they were meant to cure.
Involuntary lip smacking and facial ticks
Sexual dysfunction
Disagreeable body odor
These things will make your life tougher.
