The Alsation and the German Shepherd is the same thing. Look here.
A better question would be what are the different types of the German Shepherd?
Don't listen to people who do not know what they are talking about! An Alsation being an English Shepherd is absurd!! The English Shepherd is an American breed! http://www.englishshepherd.org/appearance.htm They are the same thing period (German Shepherd and Alsatian). The German Shepherd's all come from Max's original Shepherd. They have evolved over the years. Now there are numerous different Shepherds, West German Show, West German working, East German working, Czech, Slovak, American show, ect... They can come in Sable (tan sable, red sable, black sable, silver sable) Black and tan, Black and red, Black and silver, solid black and solid white. I am asked a lot for a dog that look's like Rin Tin Tin. I tell these people that they want a silver sable then! Everyone thinks Rin Tin Tin was a black and tan. The original Rin Tin Tin was a silver sable or grey. They can come in regular coats, long coats, and plush coats as well.

The German Shepherd Dog, also known as Alsation, is a breed derived from several European dogs and originally used as a herding dog. It was then developed by the German army in the late 1800s for use as a military dog being used by the Germans in the First World War. The German Shepherd Dog was then introduced into the USA and UK by soldiers returning home.

absolutely nothing!
There is no Difference. After each of the World Wars anything German fell out of popular favour.
To avoid the word German, Alsation (from the Alsace-Lorraine area) was used. In some countries, GSDs are still known as Alsation.

German Shepherd Dogs (Deutsche Shaeffer Hund - to give its correct name) are the same breed as the dog commonly referred to as Alsation. Alsace is a region of France now but it has changed between France and Germany a number of times and the inhabitants of the region are German speakers. Calling the breed "Alsation" was probably to obcure the origins of the dog during hostilities in the 20C.

There isn't one - It's just a different name for the dog. I heard somewhere that the name 'Alsation' started in WW2 when the owners of the breed didn't want to have to call their dogs 'German'.

No difference. They were originally called German Shepherd Dogs. Then we went to war with the Germans so the name was changed to Alsatian (ie from Alsace - a small region in France, that has in the past been a part of Germany).
The name "alsatian" was then associated with vicious dogs, so some preferred to call them german shepherds again.
They are the same.

AMEN bear2zealand!!
They are the same breed, I think someone else has mentioned the reason for the name change, during the wars with Germany no-one wanted to admit owning anything German so they were referred to as Alsatian which is taken from the region in Germany that they originated from (Alsace)

I own a German Shepherd and they are a completely different breed from Alsations. Alsations are actually English Shepherds, and that is why they are a seperate dog. A good way to tell is that a German Shepherd will be slightly taller and broader than an Alsation. They also have a darker coat in general, as well as it being long haired, not short like an Alsation. They also have a slightly larger paw than an Alsation. Oh, and anyone who says there is no difference has never owned a Shepherd or Alsation. If you want to see a pic of mine, view my profile: german_shepherd_girl_shez
