The regular army is what we have now. It refers to people who have enlisted rather than people who were drafted. All regular army serial numbers (8 digits) are prefaced by RA, example: RA23842***. When the draft was in effect the drafted soldiers had the prefix US in place of the RA. Does this answer your question? mattchol

Apparently nobody knows. Regular Army as opposed to Irregular Army that is a Militia. In a Militia generally people fend for themselves: they own their guns, receive minimum or no pay, may have to gather the ammo themselves, etc. A Militia is more like a bunch of people other than an organized Army, be it draftees, or professional soldiers.

It is a term for people who voluntarily enlisted, whereas others were "coerced to be there by the draft", or by other means.
