I have a pit mix. He is the best dog I have ever had including a cocker spaniel, border collie, and lab. Wouldn't trade him for the world.

Yes and no. But more yes
Yes the owners are responsible however the Pit bull breed do not show pain and do not warn before attacking. A good Pitbull whos been a wonderfull family pet can become a nightmare if ill or in pain. Some times they just give no warning. This means owners need to monitor their pit bulls more closely than owners of other breeds, the signs of distress fear or pain are just more subtle in these dogs.

I had an American Pitt Bull cross and he was the most pleasant dog you could meet - lived a long life (16 years) and never bit or even growled at anyone. Collie's that we have had have been a different story though. If you live in the UK you must get a muzzle for your dog and keep it on a leash in public - Your dog can be destroyed otherwise. It will certainly be put down if it does attack people/other dogs and you will face a fine or possibly even a prison sentence in this event. I have cats now as they have very individual personalities but crucially even though they are less tolerant of being poked etc they arent able to kill a child.

I highly disagree. My girlfriend and I have two pitbulls ... Our oldest one is about two and 1/2 years old ... Then we bread him with a female pit and got another pit out of that litter ... We have two males that look just alike, they are very loving and have never hurt anyone or anything ... We figured with them both being males that they would get agressive towards each other as the young one matures but we were wrong, the youngest one is almost one year old now ... They cuddle up and sleep together and you wont ever find one without the other ... The shocking thing out of this is that we keep them both in the house, along with a female lab puppy, and two cats ... So don't listen to the people who give them a bad rep ... That's only the pits that have been trained to fight

There are less bad dogs than bad owners. Dogs are often very receptive to the way they are trained, and I'm glad your pitbull is so good.
The problem is that the pitbull was bred originally as a fighting dog. Most dogs will fight under certain circumstances, but in the pitbull - man has bred a particularly talented fighter. The consequences for getting it wrong with a pitbull are worse than for other breeds.
For that reason (coupled with the number of irresponsible dog owners out there) I do support the restrictions placed on pitbull ownership in the UK.
For you though, it sounds as though you have a fabulous pet, and I'm really pleased for you.

I do not think there are bad dogs. Bad owners- yes- too many of them in fact. I worry about the pit bulls around here because there are alot of GREEDY jerks who just breed, not knowing squat about lineage, temperment, health. I would not buy any pit from this area because of massive ignorant in breeding. I would be afraid this would cause some serious issues. I do however admire the breed and the people who have them for pets.
The fighting thing has been a huge issue, and probably will not go away in the near future. Unfortunate for the animals.

Pit Bull Terriers are not a breed as such, they are in origin an American cross of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier with another breed. They are specifically mentioned under the Dangerous Dogs Act in the UK and are required to be neutered and to wear muzzles in public. Failure to comply could result in Magistrates ordering the dog to be put down. Pit Bulls can be very loving to people but I wouldn't trust one with a cat or even a child on its own.

It is down to the owners mostly some dogs tho do have an evil streak and I'm afraid pit bulls and rottweilers come in that catergory. And b4 anyone says different i am not saying all pit bulls or rottweilers some are the best family dogs you can own.

I have the same experiences with Staffordshire Bull Terriers here in UK. They have a bad rep too. There is no such thing as a bad dog - only bad owners.

Proud American Pit Bull Terrier owner here (4 of them) They all live in the house with myself, husband and kids. They are the best, and as you said love everyone! The owner is the one who is to take care of and love the dog, just like a parent is to take care of and love a child. If the owner is not doing there job right, they make the dog what it is going to be.

its partly the way an animal is raised but also to do with the dogs genes,to have a dog that was originally bread to kill bulls in a lot of peoples opinions is not a good idea. i think you should never leave any dog alone with children and if you are a responsible pet owner it doesnt matter what the dog is.
