We're cancelling our Sky subscription soon (500+ channels and STILL nothing to watch!) and we wonder whether the box itself can be used to pick up freeview channels? If not, I'll nick my son's digibox from his room. And his PS2 while I'm at it...

Yes, you can. Just take the card out and see what channels you still receive. These will continue to pick up when you cancel your subscription.

SKY carries the same channels that Freeview does - so its unlikely that you will find any improvement on your TV viewing. Some Freeview channels are subscription only (most of the UK TV channels)

I don't know if the Sky Box will still work once your subscription ends - supposedly these channels are free to view and carried by SKY. I know when setting up a SKY box for my mother recently before I'd sussed it needed a phone connection that the main Freeview channels were available on a Sky box (BB3,4 & ITV2,3 &4, More4, FilmFour) etc......

They also carry ITV, BBC1 & 2 C4 & Five

Yes we had a full subscription and cancelled it and you get all of the freeview channels!

You can as long as you have a valid skycard without being subscribed to sky (ie if you have been subscribe to sky but you cancel subscription later) when the skycard expires then you lose all free channels.

Yes, you can get limited channels.
Sky do a one off charge (c£150) for digital too, that might be cheaper as you've already got the box? Worth asking the question...

As far as I'm aware you just ask Sky for a free-to-air card which you put in your box and then you can receive just the free channels.
