The Hb level varies from 12 to 14 in an adult. For a 8 year old child 11.8 doesn't sound so bad. The level of Hb varies greatly in relation to the diet. Green vegetables don't always do the trick. The child must eat meat for it contains the greatest amount of iron.
If the child doesn't suffer from a blood disease or any condition that affects the level of Hb, a Hb of 11.8 is just fine.

the count is not bad for a child.

Well to increase the Hb count you can give your child good quality DATES or DATE SYRUP which is rich in iron content. so u can give 2 teaspoons or 2 dates per day. this will do wonders.

Iron supplements may be necessary as a short-term solution.

Does the child eat normally and a does it get a reasonably balanced diet, including iron sources such as meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts and veggies?

What did the GP recommend?
