People, even Christians, have free will. On a personal level, I came powerfully to know Jesus about 4/5 years ago, and I grew spiritually very quickly, even became a cell (house group) leader after 2 years despite virtually no biblical knowledge prior to my conversion. I have given the gospel faithfully at work and to my friends (2 of them got saved) and prayed for healings that did get instantly healed. BUT my husband recently had a fling and I am tempted to retaliate in kind. I KNOW i'ts wrong and I am strong enough to resist, but not everyone is. In the end, mistakes will be made by people, but God will help them back on their feet and forgive them and help them if they ask Him to.

Because no-one is perfect and everyone wants to have something to make them feel better. Some people do that by religion, others by a different belief system. Karma is a good one though, it really helps to stop you doing something bad because you KNOW that it is gonna come back and bite you on the butt. If the church rejected all sinners, they would be no more Christians and the Billion $ system that is organised religion would be completely broke, so they preach that God forgives all that repent so you can rape, pillage and steal as long as you say sorry, then you won't be burnt forever in the firey pits of hell. Pretty sad huh, and one of the very little known loopholes of Christianity!

That depends on the religion in question eg Catholics embrace the idea of Confession but Protestants do not. Obviously the place to look for forgiveness is with a religious figure (like a rabbi or priest) and it has to be a positive that the wrongdoer in question still is guided by his religious beliefs - assuming they are not corrupt and ill-founded beliefs. Hopefully the fear of God's justice will help prevent the wrongdoer from straying too far from the right path - yeah, he's done wrong but perhaps LESS wrong than if he had no religious beliefs at all

I honestly do not know why they think that is the answer to solving what they have done, do they think god doesn't see them on a daily basis and only in church when they go running there, they really need to re-evaluate their beliefs if that's what they do believe, running to church to confess does not give them clearance or the god given right to go back out and do the same sort of things either, we all pay for our sins the way we are meant to and running to a church won't stop that happening.

I don't know. If they really felt it was wrong they wouldn't do it.

A problem with the major religions. You should do what you feel is right because it is right and not because god might spank your backside for not doing it.

I get annoyed when religious folk (not animists and pagans, but Christians and the like) think that morality is only possible through religion. Like the only reason to do something that is right is to avoid going to hell. That is like saying that once you are an adult you'll stop making your bed because your mother isn't there to tell you to.

Great question..,just like why do prisioners always find Jesus after they are incarcerated.I didnt know Jesus was lost???? I dont know if its to clear their conscience and feel that they are forgiven but they usually end up doing the same thing over and over again.Thats why you have to have the conscience of good and bad, right and wrong instilled in you and taught to children. Its a shame where we are headed today with the gangs and such.

Because they are looking for forgivness and for guidance.

The same reason many people turn " spiritual " when something reallt bad happens.
Look at the spiritual revival that we have immediately after 9/11

To bad it didn't last

We tend to 'need" God when we are at a low in our lives but we think we don't need Him when all is going well.

Because they think they can do bad things and run to church and be forgiven. Then go do them again. Churches would send armies out to kill, and tell them God will forgive them when they come back and confess. Been going on forever.

Because you can confess to "God" and at worst get told to apologise or say ten Hail Marys. Where as if you confess to a Chief Inspector, you may end up serving a lengthy prison stretch.

Becaus they might have felt guilty and figured God is the only one who will accept them after what they have done.
Because they might claim sanctuary in a Church, and even confidentiality in Confession.
Or because they think they can sucker some poor priest, preacher, deacon, minister or reverand.
