I have an adult pitbull and I have had him since birth. He has always been sooooo sweet until recently. Whenever I go to pet him now or just love on him, he growls at me, shows his teeth, his eyes get dialated and his hair on his back stands up. He has had all of his shots and has NEVER been mistreated in any way! He is very spoiled in fact! I have 3 kids and he also growls at just 1 of my kids....I keep him locked up since this....is he "turning" on us and if he is why??? I don't want to get rid of him because most likely animal control will have to put him down. I also don't want to wait until he "attacks" one of us....advise???

No, I have not gotten him fixed yet, I have heard that that helps with the aggression. I have realised now, reading some of the answers here that the best thing to do is to possibly have him put down....my kids ARE most important to me...thanks all!!

I DO NOT appreciate "fightingpit" saying what he said.Just because someone has a mental illness doesn't mean that they are lying about a dog!! What an ignorant jerk!

You answered your own question. He is acting like this BECAUSE he is very spoiled. Dogs are not 'fubabies' and need to be treated like dogs. To treat a breed such as this as one is asking for trouble. He is definately telling you he is running the house.

You need to regain control! Get him into an obedience class ASAP. NOT one of those bribe with treats type classes designed for the 'furbaby' crowd like they have at Petsmart or Petco. Go to a serious training club where they have experience dealing with aggressive dogs.

This is a tough thing to go through with any pet. First, I would recommend taking him through obedience classes. You may want to start with private lessons then move into group lessons. Private lessons reinforce that you are the boss. Group lessons help with socialization, and reinforcing that you are the boss with distractions around.

Most importantly be careful with your children. Unfortunately any animal can be unpredictable, and you don't want your children in harms way.

Another piece of advise is to never let your dog on anything that is higher than your knees. This means he is not allowed on the couch, the bed, or other areas that allow him to be taller. This gives him some sense of power, and will bring out dominance in him.

But try to find a good obedience place. It is your best bet for allowing him to see that you are the boss in your house and that his behaviors are unacceptable.

Best of luck!!

My advice is to take him to a vet and have him checked out.
he may have an infection in his ears or somewhere else.
Dogs cant talk so if they are sore they growl to let you know that they dont like the sensation they are getting.
If that checks out ok maybe its time to move on to a not so renowened agressive dog sometimes dogs get older and become unmanagable.

He wants to be the boss. Locking him up will make the aggression worse. Either get him to a trainer, or you risk need ing him put down. If he is growling at YOU and your kids, he's losing respect fast and may beome dangerous. Good luck with nay decisions you make.

You better consult a vet regarding this ,matter. It does appear that this dog is turning on you and others. A pitbull, not playing with a full deck, is like a bomb getting ready to detonate.

Have you had this animal fixed? How old is he? Could he just be getting interested in females?

If he's fixed and is still growling at you, it might be time to put him down. Your children are your first concern.

please dont think I'm a dog hater, but pit-bulls are nasty no matter what! They have family lines that go way back to some ancestor that WAS nasty! This will always come out in the generations to come. Please, don't wait until the dog does damage to you , your family , or someone else! I promise you, IT WILL!!!
