I do it too!
I think we just copy are parents and other parents we see. And also our children seem to be more scared of being told off by strangers than us.

Well, as a parent you know instinctively that a young child does not know what a manager is or a shopkeeper and of course we do not really want to ask the shopkeeper or bus driver to act as bogey man to our child nor I suppose would the shopkeeper, busdriver want to be seen as such. So it is easier to offload on the man/lady if only for a few seconds grace before the child realises it is all a con.they are so quick the little darlings,

hahahahahahaha!!!!! Not having kids I dont know why - but its obviously a universal thing as every mother I know says it - and you always hear frustrated parents say it in shops!!! Maybe a "man" or a "woman" is just a bit more threatening than the shopkeeper etc! Hahahaha thats a REALLY good question!!

As a parent I don't do that as I know how pissed off I get. One of my friends is famous for always using the name of the person whose house she's in - ..... won't let you back in here; ......will be very annoyed with you.etc. Very annoying being the threat!!
I might say something like the other shoppers want peace but I'd never deliberately scare them of other folk!

ithe saying goes back to the time when children were put into work houses by their parents when they were bad or couldn't afford them. For unruly children the threat of the man/lady from the workhouses were a deterent for bad behaviour

i don't say it i have 4 children so i don't why people do.i work in a shop what really bugs me is when people see that lady she is going to tell you off if you don't behave. I won't tell them off there your kids you do it and STOP making me be the mean one. Say if your child gets lost in a shop they won't go to me to help because they think I'm mean.

Yes we have all done it! They never listen to us so may be the thought of some one else shouting scares them! Like when we say wait till daddy gets home. I don't mind as it works and makes shopping easy!

I'm a parent and I have no idea what you're talking about.
If my children are misbehaving, why would the thought of a man/lady coming do anything?
Why would they care? I handle my children. I don't expect someone else to.

kids tend to behave better for other people than their own. they know how far they can push you but they are naturally suspicious of strangers.also they know the routine of how youll react eg slapped hand, toys taken off them no sweeties but they have no idea of how a stranger will react
