I have self diagnosed myself with IBS- Bloating, sever cramps, urgency to use the toilet, constipation etc.It really gets me down sometimes as I am scared to eat anything before getting on the tube in case i have to "go". I have stated taking Colpermin tablets, so hopefully they will soothe the symptoms. Does anyone have any really good suggestions that actually work for IBS - I am going travelling to new zealand soon and it is a VERY long flight - I really need something that works! do you think I should go and get a proper diagnosis from a doctor? Can someone please shed some light on the whol IBS thing for me, as no-one else I know has it!

You really should see your doctor, you may have diagnosed wrong, he will send you for test to ensure its not other bowel disorders.

There is a herbal remedy called Molecure, my sister took it for Colitis, but I think there was something about IBS. Worth a look.

It is important to go to a doctor and get the diagnosis from there. Several other conditions give symptoms like this and it is important to get the right treatment for the right condition. There are some things you can do. Keep a log of what you eat and how much stress you are under. Watch also results and see what seems to trigger it for you. Since it is a syndrome, there are many allied causes that bring about a common set of symptoms.
High fibre diets and added metamucil twice a day can make the difference for many people. Others require prescription medicine like cholestyramin and dicetel to make the difference. They work a lot better than colpermin!
Best wishes in getting the answers.

I also suffered once but i had it the other way - couldn't go.

It is different for different people, as is the cure. For me the cure was aloe vera tablets and a holiday to Peru in 2003. I drank coca tea every day and this cured the problem, i have never suffered since. The problem is that Coca tea is only available in south America and you can't bring any over here as you will be arrested.

You are better off going to your doctor prior to your trip to get everything checked. I had a camera up there to check everything was in order and that put my mind at rest. If you go private you should get seen within 2 weeks as opposed to 6 months on the NHS.

Once you have been given the OK for any serious condition you can get on with finding your own cure. It is a good idea to see if you are intolerant to any foods. I found i was intolerant to dairy so i stopped drinking cows milk and eating cheese for 3 months then gradually re-introduced these. I'm OK now.

They do these type of tests at most gyms and also Holland and Barrett stores by appointment.

Hope this helps x

Hi,

I used to have it very badly and now and again it will pop its ugly head. I had a diagnosis when I was younger and was given some tables to help. They worked but the side effects were that it came back twice as much when the tablets wore off. So I'd recomment that you see your GP to determine if it is that or something else. Now years later through my own trial and error with foods I know what I can and can't eat. The shame is all the nice stuff I love I cant have unless I want cramps etc later.

My father suffers from IBS too and whatever he eats, it causes his tummy to go bloated, causing flatulence.

Yes, do go to a doctor for check-up and see what opinion they have got to say about your condition.

Unfortunately, there is no definite medicine/remedy for IBS so if you feel that the Colpermin helps, continue taking them (ask the doctor if it's good for you).

As for the long flight to NZ, do not eat till you are very full; small portions should suffice. Drink water and rest well ((:

My dad drinks Sunraysia's prune juice to ease his bowel system and he takes Dairy Care, supplements that eases his lactose intolerance.

Get a proper diagnosis from your doctor, there are better IBS meds out there than Colpermin. There are other illnesses that have the same symptoms as IBS but need different treatment.

i have IBS and i find these foods set it off with a vengeance......
cauliflower, broccollii, eggs, brown bread, stress, worrying are big factors too, plus lots more, but i must say that as soon as i have eaten anything within 5-10 mins i must be near a toilet, so if i know i've got an appointment i don't eat until its over.......IBS has been the bain of my life and it has stopped me doing certain things, i have had time off work in the past, and am due to start a new job next week and am nervous but trying to not get too nervous because that will set it off.....there are different products you can take for IBS speak to your doctor, who will advise you....good luck with your trip (have you got room for one more lol).......

I also have it, but manage my symptoms without medication. I know what my trigger foods are (fats and oils, peanuts, tomatoes) so I avoid them at all costs. For the flight, drink plenty of water to help avoid consitpation and wear loose trousers incase your stomach bloats. For a few days before the flight, eat low residue foods such as chicken and rice, as these don't produce much waste in the bowel, and should reduce the need to evacuate as often.

I self diagnosed and then went to the Dr and he just agreed with me and gave me some colofac tablets which basically coat your insides with talc.
I later went to a reflexologist who said that I had an allergy to either wheat or dairy. I would suggest giving up one first and then the other. For me it is wheat and various other things, like that Oatibix stuff. Try coco pops for breakfast and salad for lunch and see if it makes a difference. If not have toast and a sandwich.
I can sympathise with the pain, I had an attack yesterday and felt like I had been stabbed. Ouch.

I have it and it is terrible. I have had it for about 7 years now and ended up losing my job because of it. They have found no medicine that helps for me and I have gone through all of the tests. Almost everything I eat makes me have sever cramps where I can't even move. I have just learned to survive with it as best as I could. I wish you the best of luck.
