When the state kills, we are sending the message that we are hypocrites, that violence is really not all bad. Therefore people internalize this throughout their lives with this inconsistency hardwired into their brains.
That is the only theory I have as to why the US has so much higher crime rates than comparable countries that do not have the death penalty.

The death penalty is a tough nut in one way I think it is necessary and in another I think it is not. Certain crimes are just so horrible that the only justice is the death penalty. For instance the rape and murder of a child or baby. There is no penalty severe enough for that crime. I guess that is what I really mean the crime must be so horrible that there is not a severe enough penalty for it. For other really bad crimes I think all states should have life in prison without being released ever. And I do mean the crooks entire life until he is buried. When we give the death sentence we give them way too many appeals , the penalty should be carried out within 1 year of conviction not 15 or 20 years later.

I believe the death penalty is necessary. The penalty should be awarded to those criminals who have committed heinous crimes against humanity. The very nature of such crimes brings shame upon the human race. The death penalty will act as an example to potential criminals & it will deter them from the path of violence.
There is another side to this story. The convicted must be proved guilty before being done away with! This leaves a small margin of doubt. There could be an innocent man charged with murder. But sometimes it is neccessary to throw away the water along with the baby. Sadly this is the only way we can bring justice to most of the affected.
Thank you.

I don't have any sites to give you, But since you have posted a question about the death penilty being necessary I will give you my opinion on the question. YES, I do believe it is necessary. My reasoning is that if you have a person with multiple convictions and some if not all ARE DNA type convictions then YES put this person down like a sick dog. And as an example only, a CONVICTED child molester. WHY should WE (the tax payer) have to support this pedophile in prison. When you think about this yes this convict HAS lost his/her freedom/s. BUT this person also has FREE medical, FREE meals, FREE room and board, FREE heat, FREE hot water. ALL of this at OUR expense. ALL this while we have homeless people begging for money and or food on the streets. Is this fair?

How can you even ask whether it is neccessary. Have you ever been affected by crime. Criminals have more rights than law abiding citizens in SA. I can assure yo that with some of the atrocities that are accuring here - death is to good for these things that call themselves human beings. Do you oppose the death penalty for a man of 35 that rapes a 6 month old baby girl??? He gets sent to prison for a few months and she is scarred and destroyed for the rest of her life. People who are so anti death - come to SA and then we will have this debate again.......otherwise shut up and stay out of the firing line.

There is only one reason that I would be against the death penalty, and that is that there could be a case of mistaken identity. When monstrous humans torture and kill others in horrific ways, why should they live, even in jail, to enjoy 3 meals a day, and tv and books etc.So many crimes are so bad, we are not even given the details. Why keep these bastards alive, they very often get out and do it all over again.

It's probably neither necessary nor useful. But it's quite popular in many parts of the USA, especially the South and where Mormons live.
The best pro-death penalty site is http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/ (Death Penalty Information Center)
There are many anti-death penalty sites, including http://www.amnesty.org/ (Amnesty International) and their USA branch.

No, i dont think its needed. It should be confined to the dark ages where it belongs.
Think about it, if someones killed then later proved innocent, which has happened, you can never give that life back. Also, what State has the right to take a citizens life? Its Horrendous!
No, ill leave the Executions with the Gestapo, im glad we got rid of it in the 50's

I know an individual who killed someone, went to prison, got out, killed another person, went back to prison, then killed a prison staff member. Had that person been executed, two innocent people might still be alive. I believe it is needful in certain extreme circumstances. It is something that should be used with extreme care and certainly not be used simply because we are angry at the offender.
