Purdah( the correct term is to be covered as purdah is an asian term not an islamic one). Its ot be modest in dress and to be covered so that you are not showing any flesh other than hands and face(in some cases feet).
Most young british muslimah dress with long sleveed tops with long skirts or trousers and a matching (we are very colour cordinated lot) hijab(headscarf).
Purdah if you mention seem to bring up the image of women with the veil covering thier faces and wearing all black but it not all about that.If you look around you will see muslim women wear every colour under the sun.
Even though we cover it doesn't mean we shouldn't look good and my my don't we just!!!! Purdah in literal terms means to be covered. Hope that helps!

Purdah is a dress code, based on modesty and preserving the moral values of society. It requires women (and men) to dress modestly. Different islammic groups and countries have different interpretations, varying from only requiring a Hijab to cover makeup or jewellery, right up to requiring a burqa, made famous by it's being compulsory under the taliban. It has become a custom, rather than a religious requirement, in many countries, and the banning of wearing the hijab has caused all kinds of political problems, particularly in Turkey and France. Even in the muslim world, there is alot of debate about it.

Islam uplifted the status of women and granted them their just rights 1400 years ago. Islam expects women to maintain their status.
Hijab for men

People usually only discuss ‘hijab’ in the context of women only. However, in the Glorious Qur’an, Allah (swt) first mentions ‘hijab’ for men before ‘hijab’ for the women. The Qur’an mentions in Surah Al Noor: “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.” [Al-Qur’an 24:30]

The moment a man looks at a woman and if any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his mind, he should lower his gaze.
Hijab for women.

The next verse of Surah Noor, says: “ And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons, their husbands’ sons, their brothers or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye believers! Turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss.” [Al-Qur’an 24:31]
