China is quite a big country, 3rd largest in the world, so there is a lot to choose from. Pity you can't answer what exactly it is that you are interested in, notanothername. But of course, there are the big cities: Beijing (roughly 18 million population) Shanghai (close to 20 million population) Chongqing (roughly 30 million population). Cities like Beijing and Nanjing have many impressive historical attractions; for example, Beijing has the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. Shanghai has a legacy from the 1920's, but it is now probably the most modern and economically thriving city in China. There are touristy areas like Guilin (with beautiful natural rock formations that look like miniature cliffs) or Xi'an (with its wonderful ancient terracotta warriors).
China has lots of factories and has a lot of industrial (so many things in the world are made there), so if that's your thing - then it is a great place for you to visit.
There are even beaches, which have generally not been developed too attractivly, such as the beaches on Hainan Island.
You should be prepared that the Chinese food in China and the Chinese food in the West are quite different. And in China, they do not have fortune cookies. And they have never heard of General Chao's Chicken.
If you ever do go to China, hope you will find it to be a good place to visit. I am a firm believer that going to other countries and seeing how other people in the world live is generally a good thing and should promote more peace and better understanding between people.

China is a good place to visit. I have lived here for three years now and although there are some things that get to me, overall it is a great place. As Lisa mentioned prepare to be stared at alot. Don't worry about that or the endless "hello's". Just smile and politely say hello back. After a while you'll start to feel famous. Just remember that you are on their turf and you are a guest. What bugs me the most is foreigners who come to China and walk around like they own the place. They don't smile or respect the customs. It is like they are in some kind of competition with China. That is not good.
Watch out for the occasional thief or trickster that may want to take advantage of the "out of towners" just lke anywhere else.
You'll have a great time.

China is a good place to visit, but beware of the language barrier. So, you would need help with the language and to move around. Also, it is a vast country, so, you have to plan upfront the cities you want to visit.
I would recommend Beijing, Shanghai & Hainan islands.

Yes, if you want to see historical sights you go to Beijing. If you want to got to a more metropolitan place, you go to shanghai. Communication may be a problem though but usually, tour guides are very good in speaking english and can definitely help you on your way around.

Depends what you like! You have to be prepared to be stared at (if you're white) and to not be able to communicate with the vast majority of people. It is also very cold and damp at certain times of the year.
If you're interested in the culture then go for it. I would like to go again but personally I wouldn't go back without being on an organised tour or having a guide, as it can be quite intimidating.

If you like varied scenery, China does have this. Each province has its unique senery and unique culture and is different from the next one. So if you like different scens, China will be a good idea.
