The soul is the witness to all of our thoughts and actions as well as our dreams. When the soul is "dreaming" it is witnessing events in a realm not of this Earth.... The body wakes up when the soul is returned to the body. In Islam, we believe sleep is the sister of death in that the soul is taken out of the body (by God) and goes to a place that only God knows.
