My brother uses a "durabrand" DVD player from walmart. I purchased a "magnavox" 3-4 years ago at my local blockbuster The only ""repair work"" I have had to do is once in a while change the remote batteries, and use the DVD lens cleaning disk I bought at Walmart for $25.00 just pick carefully as most DVD players are around $100-150 for the good cheap ones.

DVD players are currently such a cheap item ($30-$40) they can almost be considered disposable. Sure you can pay hundreds, even thousands of dollars, but basic models will do what most people want. DVD is also on the verge of being replaced (at least for those with HDTVs) with HD-DVD or Blu-Ray high definition DVDs, so it might be worth considering whether spending more than approximately $100 is worth doing if there is any possibility of wanting to move to HD in the next couple of years.

I have had 5 DVD players plus 4 in computers. Only one has "died" and that was the second most expensive.

As with most consumer electronics with moving parts it is probably safest to buy a name brand (e.g. Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba) and an extended warranty. Don't spend more than $100 on the player itself. Look at review sites such as http://www.consumersearch.com/www/electronics/dvd-players/index.html

I would reccomend a panasonic, they play everything, dvds, cds, and vcds. I rated dvd players in 2005 for consumerreports.co, and also have a degree from mit. Your second best choice is a toshiba. Don't buy a sony dvd players. They have a very delicate and faulty inner-structure. Give me ten points if you buy a panasonic. I had a sony and a panasonic dvd player, bought both of them, the best sony available and it lasted one year, and wasn't to great at all. The panasonic is the best dvd player, period

The cheapest u can find. With Blu-ray and HD-dvd players out, I wouldn't spend more than I absolutely had to in order to play antiquated technology. DVD's are going the way of VCR's so don't spend any more than you have to. And start saving for your new HD DVD player.

I really wouldn't advise Sony, Everything I've had of theirs hardly lasts. The current stereo I use is Sony and it's ony 2 years old and its falling apart. It won't play CDs anymore and you can only adjust the volume on the remote since the dial on the stereo is broke. And I've looked after it, I don't abuse it. I've got a Phillips DVD recorder and it's never given me one bit of trouble for the year and a half I've had it.

As a video technician, I always reccommend Toshiba, Best buy carries them, and they are very durable, and last a long time. Also fairly inexpensive.

Just don't get Cyber Home. They are terrible. They are very cheap, but when it comes to DVD players and Customer service, forget it.
