First and foremost, you'll want to disable the Compressed Folder feature in Windows. If you don't, it will always treat ZIP files like a directory structure and will always re-associate itself with them after you try to associate it with another program. You can do this by opening a Command Prompt.

Start > Run > "cmd"
Type "regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll" and hit enter.
* Typing "regsvr32 zipfldr.dll" will re-install if you prefer to have it.

Seriously, this is one of the most annoying features in Windows XP. The other is the Media file pre-cache. After you've uninstalled that, download 7-Zip and install it. It's a free compression/decompression software.
